Winter's End

I touch you
reach you
sad
Your despondency mirrored
in my aeroplane
bound for Tel Aviv
My boarding call
The cat and dog
safe at home
Our home
With the wire fence
and new gate
our second hand bed
second hand table
and chairs
We built something
Now to go
To unknown places
adventures
And you are left
alone
with the bills
your car
half paid off
and a tear on your cheek
I hold you
When do we meet
like this again?
It is a hollow hug
far more show than
anything else
Too difficult to
comprehend
The doors close
You are gone
Five months pass
I see Eiffel and Thames
Prague Cardiff Nazareth
I discover Leonard Cohen
in a field
in Israel
Not Suzanne
something more pertinent
real
And I discover you
under these ancient rocks
this sand these ruins
the eucalyptus trees
I re-invent you
need you
all over again
Remember your sigh
your neck
I blush into the wind
She cools me
I get back
War breaks out
I want you
you don't respond
Slanging match
screaming
police
and you obtain
my distance
by order
You take the dog
cat
table and chairs
I get the bed
with its broken base
And I've had lovers
from then
I've watched Schindler's List
The Pianist
and a dozen
war films in between
And
in that time
I've bled for your love
I begged for it
To no ear
And I hate you for
the waste I've become
This insipid 'man'
Clutching at 1000 straws
holding none
And you danced on
your catwalks
sipping tea
or champagne
While I lay dead
in my Alcatraz
G-d pardoned me today
I can't forgive tomorrow
or the next day
My memory isn't
a sink
But I must leave you
In whose ever arms you rest
And get on with my world
find someone else
reach you
sad
Your despondency mirrored
in my aeroplane
bound for Tel Aviv
