Nikolas Doupis has passed away

We received shocking news from Hydra: our dear friend Nikolas Doupis, beloved by all of us, passed away yesterday after a long illness.

Everyone who ever attended our gatherings on Hydra knew Nikolas. We first met him back in 2002 at the Hydra Event. The Roloi taverna was located in the harbour, perfectly placed right in front of the clock tower (our event venue was the large hall in the church courtyard). Roloi was an easy place to go during breaks, and from then on it became our group’s regular meeting place, with Nikolas taking wonderful care of us.

Even after his retirement, Nikolas continued to spend every evening with the Cohenites, while the younger generation handled the service under Yannis’s leadership. Nikolas was especially delighted when Cohen’s songs were sung into the early morning hours. He sang along and lived every moment with us.

Eija and I are deeply grateful that after a long break we were able to return to Hydra last May and meet Nikolas one last time, surrounded by his family. We will greatly miss our warm and sympathetic friend. We wish strength and comfort to his entire family.

Eija & Jarkko

This is such sad news. Nikolas was such a nice and friendly person.

He so enjoyed spending time with our Cohen group during the events.

And this is how we will always remember him. Dancing to Leonard’s music at the Roloi, being happy.

Rest in peace dear Nikolas.

This is very sad news. Nikolas was such a friendly, charming man, who loved to sing and dance with us... and who made us all seem so welcome each time we celebrated at Roloi.

He will be sorely missed.

My deepest condolences to his family and the staff there at Roloi.

R.I.P. Nikolas.

So saddened to hear this news and condolences to the family. Nikolas was a true original. Roloi Café wasn’t just where we met — it felt like ours because of him. He always made sure we were welcome and properly looked after. He never stayed on the side-lines either. Nikolas jumped into the conversations, the laughs, and the music. We also have fond memories of how enthusiastic he was about selling the Leonard Cohen Unified Hearts inspired jewellery made by his daughter – Many of us were regular customers. :D Roloi won’t feel the same without Nikolas, but the warmth, humour, and memories he gave us will last forever.

R.I.P. Nikolas

Dear family and friends Doupis,
The passing of Nikolas.makes us very very sad. He was such a wonderful friend to us since we came for the first time (2002) to Hydra. Although he looked very fragile last year, it is a great shock to hear this. We will miss him dearly. We want to wish the family a lot of strenght during this difficult time and our deepest and heartfelt condolences. We are thinking of you and in our hearts and minds we putt our arms around you.
We wll miss Nikolas very much.

Dear Jarkko and Eija and all who had the pleasure of meeting and/or getting to know Nikolas ~

I wrote this 5 hours ago, when I first read of Nikolas's passing, and so I share it here, as well:

"Oh, NO!!! Our dearest, sweetest Nikolas, always there for us, always a gentleman. This is heartrendingly sad news. I'm grateful that Jarkko and Eija were able to go there for the most recent gathering, so all of them were able to see each other one last time. Nikolas has always been an anchor for the people of the Forum. My heart is with his family and loved ones. May he Rest In Peace with his beloved wife. It *is* like the passing of an era."

It's hard to imagine Hydra and the Roloi without this dear man.
