So Long, Marianne - season 1

So Long, Marianne tells the legendary love story between Canadian singer and poet Leonard Cohen and an extraordinary Norwegian woman, Marianne Ihlen. It’s an intimate tale of two young people falling in love during a period of their life when they are trying to figure out who they are and their place in the world, while one is becoming one of the most famous singers of all time. Their story crosses the world, travelling from the Greek Island of Hydra to New York, Montreal and Oslo, with the majority of the series set on picturesque Hydra, where they lived during the 1960s. There, they joined a bohemian group of writers, artists, poets, and outcasts who were exploring a new world of free love, drugs, and artistic freedom, but also experiencing the rivalries and jealousy that accompanied their intense, interwoven lives.

So Long, Marianne season 1 premieres on Monday 14 October on SBS On Demand.

A new Crave original series inspired by Leonard Cohen's iconic song "So Long, Marianne" delves into the complex love story between the renowned songwriter and his muse, Marianne Ihlen.

Starring Alex Wolff as Cohen, the series aims to highlight the depth of their relationship beyond the music.

Wolff, a lifelong fan of the artist, expressed his commitment to honouring Cohen's legacy.

"I loved him from the first thing I read. So I just felt like I owed it to him and owed it to this unbelievable person and unbelievable life to give it everything that I have."

His co-star, Thea Sofie Loch Naess, said her goal was to show audiences Marianne was more than just Cohen's love interest.

"We are brought on this huge task to kind of try in our way to bring them back to life. And you have to do that with respect and honour and for me, that was to show that she was a muse. Yes. But she was a human being," she said.

Wolff said there are sides of Cohen's story that fans may not know.

"I think some of my favorite parts of the show is when it's just about our romance and about him writing and failing and things that are working, things that are not working. And I love that about the show."

A Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame inductee, there's no denying that Cohen has left an impact on the world. It's something Wolff noted when he was visiting Montreal.

"Leonard has this godlike feeling here in Montreal with that big mural."

The actor said he hopes to do Cohen justice.

"Thank you so much to everybody in Montreal, because it's not like it's easy to hand over something like Leonard to some American kid. And I don't take that responsibility lightly. And I just hope that they know that I gave all my love to it," he said.

And his love grew as he shot parts of the series in Montreal. He wasted no time getting acquainted with the city.

"You have great bagels., the bagel place that I went to is amazing, that he used to go to. And I went there and just would get bagels."

The actor added that walking in an icon's footsteps is a bucket list item for him.

"I am really lucky. I consider it to be one of the great gifts of my life," said Wolff.

I watched the first episode but unfortunately no original English sound but German dubbing. That doesn't make it worth watching for me. But just wait for the release somewhere else in Europe or a streaming service

Hi, I watched a part of the movie yesterday, than I broke up. It is not worth to watch it.

I watched the first episode yesterday and though i had no expectations I was very positively surprised. The actors very authentic, the story maybe a little to gloomy, but a film with a lot of love and empathy for the characters with a dreamlike backdrop. I am looking forward to the next episode.

I watched the all episodes and found it better than I expected. Alex Wolff must have studied Leonard very well and displays the voice and gestures, madnesses, efforts and failures, laughs and cries in a way that gets close to the real events in those days. Worth watching.

The first two episodes were shown to the people of Hydra on Sunday 6 October. A large inflatable screen, rather like a two-dimesional bouncy castle, was erected at the edge of the sea in Kamini. The screening was a thank-you to the locals who took part in the filming as extras in spring 2023. Free souvlaki and free beer were provided for everyone: my kind of cinema!

The two episodes I saw were far better than I expected. These first two focussed on the back-stories of Leonard in Canada and of Marriane and Axel in Norway and on the road trip down to Greece. I felt the principal actors were very good. They had clearly made a real effort to mimic their subjects' mannerisms and intonation, especially Wolff. I liked the way Marianne and Axel when in private spoke Norwegian to each other.

In 2023 I reached the island after filming had finished but in time to see the production team pack up the props and the Katsikas set. At the time I was a little irritated at errors that could have been avoided, such as the appearance of the roman alphabet when at that time all signs were in the Greek alphabet, and the laughable idea that Katsikas, a grocery store, served breakfasts. However in the film this was barely noticeable. What the producers have done is to conflate Katsikas with the taverna a few doors down where indeed the foreigners did party. In Leonard's book of sheet music there is a fine photo of Leonard, Marianne, Chuck and Gordon carousing at that taverna.

I think the order of events has been mixed up in some cases. In the film, Leonard buys his house too early while in reality this occurred after he and Marianne were in a relationship. Adam and Lorca, and also Douskos, refused permission to film on their property so those scenes will feel odd to those who know the island. But I was pleased to see that a lot of filming was done in and outside the real 'Australia House', the home of the tragic Charmain Clift and George Johnston, the first foreigners to buy property on Hydra. Charmain Clift's description of life on Hydra in the late fifties and early sixties, 'Peel Me a Lotus', is well worth reading. She and George feature strongly in the second episode.

So all in all, from what I have seen so far, I think this TV series is a worthwhile addition to everything that has been written and filmed about Leonard and Marianne. The producers have been fastidious in portraying real people and events accurately.

If the moderators consider it a good idea, I’m thinking that lots of info and comments about this show which has already been posted from 26 Mar 2023 in the “Casting Call” thread and the more recent 16 Sept 2024 “German TV” thread could be combined into one thread for a more comprehensive and inclusive read. Just a thought.

They have changed the On Demand part as follows:

Today is the first day the TV series is available in the UK, via itvX. Predictably I have been binge watching it.

While of course there are some anachronisms (plus conflated places and events), it seems to be essentially an accurate portrayal of the couple. But there is something I want to ask forum members about.

In the fourth episode it is claimed that on their way to return the VW Beetle to Norway, Leonard and Marianne travelled through Albania. I have never heard of this before. Is this documented anywhere?

Throughout the sixties and seventies, under the dictatorship of Enver Hoxha, Albania was a closed country. Additonally, the only half-way decent road north out of Greece in those days went through Skopje and Belgrade: I first travelled that route in 1969, and again in 1972 and 1977. In 1972 I came down the Dalmatian coast but had to skirt around Albania, crossing Kosovo instead. Did Leonard and Marianne in about 1961 really take the much longer and much rougher route through Epirus and into Albania? And if so, why, given their lack of money and so their need to get to Norway as quickly as possible?

And did they really drive through East Germany at a time when visas were really hard to come by? It does seem unlikely.

B4real, it was a welcome experience to watch Ep 1 on SBS tonight. I really enjoyed it. What’s more, I ascertained it is there for streaming On Demand too, so I watched Ep. 2 as well.

Like Henning and Hydriot, I now plan to binge watch the remaining episodes during the week. I echo their positive comments too… particularly impressed, like Henning, with Wolff’s take on Leonard.
