I didn't dare hope there would be a whole album.

Well Hartmut, It looks like it's a double album but of only 10 songs, though taking into account the length of some of the tracks I'm not surprised it will be on two discs.
Roll on 19th June...

You did.
Sometimes I have nothing to say or add to a thread other than click a thumbs up icon like I do in WhatsApp. Happens quite often here. Don't think that option is here.

A very young Dylan at the March on Washington, 1963, where MLK Jr gave his 'I have a Dream' speech...

I wonder if he sometimes looks back and thinks "what a long strange trip its been"

Kush, I’m a bit slow coming to the party here and was wondering what you were doing posting Nat King Cole songs in Dylan's thread but its all clear now

because I’ve just listened to this album for the first time.
I couldn’t help but notice throughout the album how many famous people are named and numerous familiar sayings plus referencing of lines and titles from other artists' songs.
At this stage, three songs I really like are I’ve Made Up My Mind To Give Myself To You, Key West and my favourite, Mother Of Muses. This is how I heard these lines in the latter -
“Who cleared the path for Presley to sing? /Who carved the path for Martin Luther King?”
And it ends with, “I’m travelling light (instantly thought of LC) and I’m a-slow comin’ home” (again LC enters my thoughts – ah, don’t think twice, it’s alright) Hehe! Who’s whose muse
I should add Murder Most Foul which is in a league all of its own. Seems appropriate that it’s set apart on a disc of its own too. Dylan’s story-telling at its best and I love the violin and piano here. Near the start, “A good day to be livin’ and a good day to die”. And mid-way through, “I hate to tell you Mister, but only dead men are free”. So many other impactful lines throughout and to the end.
Now I’m going to have a second listen to this album and no doubt hear many things I didn’t hear the first time

Play Oscar Peterson

For those who may not be up on classic jazz (or who haven't yet watched the above video), Peterson was a Canadian jazz legend from Montreal.
At the end of the Peterson video, this little treasure was brought to my attention (some of you may recognise this guy -- another Montreal legend, and one of the few names that Dylan failed to drop in his song...)

Yes Lisa, with so many names mentioned I was listening for LC’s to pop up – probably why I found some referential solace in the line I mentioned above
And coincidentally, today I came across another Canadian jazz player (born US but lived in Canada) and LC. He was a guitarist and blended many styles of music, including jazz, country, classical, and flamenco and used finger-style techniques not often used in jazz guitar. He’s not mentioned by Dylan but the below info is interesting nonetheless.

In early '64, Cohen tours Western Canada, performing with the Lenny Breau Trio in Winnipeg, and upsetting members of the audience in Vancouver for using salty language and, while on stage, inviting women back to his hotel room.
Hummmm.....
There is a documentary about Lenny Breau called "The Genius of Lenny Breau Documentary 1999" in which Leonard is shown speaking about him at approx. 1:04:15mins -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4I0Xw0XBKqE
And now that I’ve inadvertently side-tracked this thread, I’ll go back to Dylan by saying I have now listened to his new album two more times and I still favour the same songs from my first hearing.
But I’m also liking and relating to, I Contain Multitudes. Amongst multitudes of good lines it contains

this one resonated, “I sleep with life and death in the same bed”.

Hi B4,
I figured what other time could one post Nat King Cole songs on a thread for a brand new Dylan album and have it make complete sense.

Lenny Breau was an excellent musician! Thanks for the reminder! I may be mis-remembering, but I thought I heard a recording once of Leonard reciting some poetry with the Lenny Breau trio -- or maybe it was just wishful thinking!
As for Dylan, I've not actually listened to the new album nor to more than a minute or so of the that interminably long song -- I read the lyrics out of curiosity (I have absolutely no interest in Dylan's music!).
Cheers!

You have an excellent memory, Lisa! But I have no links for an audio recording re below

Cohen was visiting Winnipeg to participate in a 1964 Manitoba Theatre Centre special production called "Poetry and Jazz" where he and master guitarist Lenny Breau shared the stage. It took place on the afternoon of February 9, 1964 and admission was $1.00.

Or sometimes I’d do set pieces, like a poem from Let Us Compare Mythologies. We did that off and on for a month, and then I worked with a great jazz guitarist from Winnipeg by the name of Lenny Breau.
Poster promoting “Poetry & Jazz With Leonard Cohen; Lenny Breau & Trio,” an event held Feb 9, 1964 at the Manitoba Theatre.
The original Leonard Cohen-Lenny Breau poster is held in the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library, University of Toronto. The ads for the Black Orchid Club and Dunn’s were found on Jazz City Montreal.

The controversy initiated by his December 1963 talk did not abate when early in the new year Cohen traveled to Western Canada. He stopped in Winnipeg for a reading/performance with the Lenny Breau Trio at the Manitoba Theatre Center and a reading at the University of Manitoba, then moved on to Vancouver, where he spoke at the University of British Columbia, the Jewish Community Center, and the Vancouver Public Library, all the while promoting the image of the poet as alienated spiritual iconoclast—cool rather than beat, mysterious rather than angry. His readings were uniformly successful and sensational.
RE: Dylan - Lisa, it would appear that he's also interested in classical music too

Checkout the last lines of the first song, I Contain Multitudes, " I play Beethoven's sonatas, and Chopin's preludes, I contain multitudes". I would've been surprised if you were interested in Dylan but no matter as we've said before, if we all had the same interests (besides LC of course

) the world would be a boring place! I'm so thankful for my eclectic, multitudinous taste in music

love this album. it is as strong an album as any of the classics he has released. keywest is for me the highlight, dylan even at eighty is still as relevant as he always was and will be.
