I think that people can expand their notions and perceptions of what is beautiful and fascinating, if they are so inclined, perhaps by learning more about the things/creatures/people that cause them to recoil, by looking at them more closely, and becoming aware of their amazing qualities, instead of just seeing the negative aspects. Eventually, appearances that may once have struck a person as unnerving or ugly or scary or otherwise unpleasant can sometimes be seen in a completely new and positive light, giving a person a whole new perspective, one that is filled with wonder and awe and joy and compassion.

Still on the topic of spiders, check out these little beauties: male peacock spiders who live in Australia. They are incredibly tiny, ranging in size from about 2 mm to 5 mm in length (you can see a medium sized one in the third photo, beside somebody's index fingernail), and, as you can also see, they are marvellously colourful! I have included a link below to a website featuring photos of many different peacock spiders, and I highly recommend checking it out -- the variety of patterns and colours on their bodies is remarkable -- each one a little work of art! I've also included a link to a fun video of some of the males doing their mating dances -- absolutely fabulous little critters! Enjoy!

This video was recorded just outside my front door.
The Australian redback spider is a relative of the black widow. Contrary to popular belief the male redback spider usually survives the mating process.

The peacock spider certainly is spectacular, but I don't think I have seen one, even though their habitat is southern Australia.

thank you, lisa and alan. it is good of you to post with information and links. my once lackadaisical curiosity concerning this species of arachnids has now received a vitamin injection, and given much to digest. those peacock spiders really are something! :)

The Australian redback spider...
Those redback spiders are not quite as cute as the little peacock spiders, but they are rather elegant. Feisty little guy, to mate with such a huge female. I feel sorry for the skink -- bad luck. Thanks for the video!

This little spider's abdominal art looks like a cross between Munch's "The Scream" and Yoda.

Not to worry -- they are not everybody's thing! I like the very first movie, perhaps mostly for sentimental reasons -- it was something that I was absolutely crazy about as a kid -- and I think it was rather "epic" in its time, but I'm not a fan of the franchise, although I have seen several of the other movies (none of which I particularly liked). Star Trek, on the other hand, is a different story -- I love it, in most of its incarnations!

I think that bits and pieces of Star Wars -- such as certain characters -- have probably been ubiquitous enough in the pop-culture world that many people at least get the references, even if they haven't seen the films (if not, there's always Google!).

it's understandable that as a kid you liked the first star wars movie, and i recall all the media hype at the time. i saw snippets of it, but for some reason didn't go to the cinema, despite science fiction being a favourite genre.

glad to learn that you enjoy star trek. i saw several of the early episodes with captain kirk and mr spock - very entertaining!

one of life's pleasures (for me) is to sit with a couple of chilled cans of heineken and a bowl of peanuts and watch a good movie, no matter what it's about!

Watching a good movie (with any beverage/snack of one's choice) is definitely one of life's pleasures!

As for other pleasures, here's an abstract painting that I did last night at a drop-in art class at a local art gallery. There was no instruction or direction other than "abstract", potentially inspired by "memories of summmer/landscapes/nature". The gallery provided all the materials, and we just had fun! Everybody's pictures were completely different from everyone else's, since we all just went with our own flow. We made several pictures using various media (ink, pastels, chalk, and acrylic paint) -- this is my favourite (acrylic paint on white paper).

Have a great weekend, everyone!

a drop-in art class? what a great idea, and your creation is 'brilliant' - in every meaning of the word! what i would give to be able to make a picture that emits such vibrancy. it would be interesting to see the others you made, or maybe you can revisit that gallery and see what else transpires. the good thing about acrylic paint is that is dries almost at once, so no problem to carry a picture home.

i actually attended a couple of weekend courses some years ago. one was to learn abstract painting, the other to learn intuitive painting. i thought it would be easy, especially the abstract course - but i was totally hopeless at it. so embarrassing at the end when my appalling effort was hung up alongside everyone else's amazing works of art. i have seen all of the beautifully coloured pictures you have posted. you have a natural talent, no matter what style you do :)
