being the innocently naive person i am, you'll be glad to know that no sarcasm was detected. to me it was just another of your wonderful feel-good messages that always lifts me up onto cloud nine. so don't worry, just stay as your adorable self

i understand that most people find no need to watch a video on a subject that doesn't concern them, and that is fine. however, personally speaking, i tend to go against the norm in that respect. yesterday, for example, i started watching a 40-minute video someone recommended that i wouldn't otherwise have bothered with - and it got more and more interesting as it progressed. i put a link here for any curious readers, but warn that it does not contain anything other than knowledge that they'll never have a use for. https://youtu.be/ATHvOdyw_UQ

split nails are a constant plague to guitarists, and my solution is always to use the 'teabag method'. false nails i have tried, but find they often tend to loosen, especially during double-quick strumming - and i don't like plectrums.

It would never occur to me to equate an instructional video giving information and advice about weak fingernails with a science video speculating about what may lie beyond the edge of the universe! But, I have a different conception of logic than you do.

that is a good response, thank you. sometimes i wish it were possible to prevent unrelated thoughts from occurring, but the human mind is often a territory with few limitations. whether that is positive or negative is up to individual assessment. einstein believed 'common sense is a collection of prejudices acquired by the age of eighteen' - but then again perhaps that was just his conception of logic?

I'd say that Einstein was onto something there! I have always thought that "common sense" is neither common nor sense, and this article (link below) not only steals my thought and agrees with me, but it does a good job explaining why (and therefore it saves me from having to type a long post!).

Are you feeling neglected, Geoffrey? You do realise that you make a post along these lines on a regular basis. I am not certain what "purpose" this particular corner of the forum ever served, and so I cannot assess whether or not it still serves much of a purpose, or a specific purpose, or any purpose at all, other than simply being a place where a few of us can drop by from time to time (and we do), to share a picture or two (or a few dozen), write down some thoughts and other random blatherings, and occasionally engage in a pointless argument with you. and

I wrote a very long post yesterday in another thread, in response to something that Bev wrote, which amused me! In case you missed it, I shall repost it here, since it does sort of fit in with the general theme of this place.

Your comment made me laugh, Bev! My first thought was, "Really? Do a lot of people actually have that problem?". I mean, is there a conceivable reality in which any given person would genuinely be required to choose only one album that they could keep, and, presumably within this scenario, never be able to listen to any other album ever again? I think that it is highly unlikely that that would ever happen to anybody, and therefore, I do not think that it is a "problem" that anyone needs to contemplate, let alone worry about!

Mind you, there may be temporary situations in which one's musical selections may be limited: perhaps if one goes on holiday and does not have one's entire music collection on their MP3 player or phone (this has happened to me in the past, particularly back when all of my music was on CD or cassettes, and I had to choose a few to take along, but with the advent of advanced digital technology, it has been less of an issue); or, if (while on holiday or otherwise away from home), one has no internet access and thus cannot use streaming services, they may have to rely on whatever music they've downloaded to their devices (if they have such devices!). There is also the ever-popular "Desert Island Discs" game ("If you were stranded on a desert island, which music would you take with you...?") -- which I suppose could happen, in the event of a shipwreck or plane crash -- but there will not be any electricity, and so one would not be able to play any of the recorded music they took with them, or not for very long, anyway, once any available batteries are drained (and assuming that the devices on which to play their "discs" were not damaged beyond playability in whatever event stranded them on the island). There is also the possibility that one may commit a crime and be sent to prison, in which there may be some limits on the amount of music available to them, and so such a person may have to make some difficult choices (although depriving an inmate of music may be considered cruel and unusual punishment, and thus it may not actually be an issue in modern prisons...). And, an even worse case scenario, if the earth is about to be obliterated and a few survivors are packed into a spaceship to go find a new planet, then perhaps there might be some limits on how much music can be taken along (although, if humans have the technology to build such a spacecraft, I should hope that it would include enough computer capacity to store every musical recording ever made, so maybe that is not the best example. I'd actually be more concerned about choosing the people who would go on that spaceship...).

G, you seem to enjoy what you are doing. The fact that others may or may not view and comment on your posts, or that your efforts serve no obvious purpose, should not really detract from that enjoyment. Any feedback received is merely a bonus. One Easter-time when I was young the family was decorating Easter eggs, perhaps four dozen eggs in total. My contribution was just a single egg, but it was unique--I drew a (faintly) recognizable depiction of the Mona Lisa on it. My enjoyment was not diminished by the fact that, like the other 47 eggs, it was eventually de-shelled and eaten.

thank you for these and other messages here and there. i promise with all my heart that i will respond to them, please don't be angry. if you were me you'd know how difficult it is to be normal. i know you don't believe it but unless i am up at night i really do have almost no time to myself. being popular sounds lovely, and sometimes it really is, but i do need time to myself. imagine having to turn the phone onto silent and taking the battery out of the doorbell all the time, it's not a good feeling when you know people want to be with you. i am the most sociable person there is, you would have to look hard to find someone as nice as me, and it's not in my nature to disappoint people and shut them out. what did i do to deserve this apart from just being myself? one can't be with a thinking or creative person and think the positive sides of their personality is contagious, it doesn't work like that. it's in one's genes, in one's DNA - you have to be born with it. i have nothing to give but friendship, and in return expect to be allowed to have time alone. this is why i sometimes get so despondent and want to wind everything down and close shop. the more you do for people the more angry they get when you stop doing it. that is the wages of kindness. have to go, 'invited' to a picnic at borgundgavlen.

I must have "stay away" in my DNA. I'm always alone and don't have any friends to hang out with. I can't imagine having to find time to be alone because you have too many people wanting to spend time with you. That seems like a problem I would love to have. (I'm sociable and outgoing but I live in an area with drug addicts, invalids and homeless. I always say hello to these folks, regardless of their situation, but I don't feel I should invite them over and try to become friends.) How do you find friends?

i believe you must live in a vastly different environment than myself. if you attend lectures, look on library notice boards for any meetings that might interest you, even join a local church - i am sure you will eventually find a friend or two. whatever you do, don't associate with people in bars, because that is not where you'll find any persons of quality. people who drink alcohol are generally people with problems, and you don't need that. it's ok to have an occasional glass of wine at home, but only in strict moderation. also, don't sleep with any new-found friends because that will change the dynamics of the relationship and any garnered respect will evaporate.

so, good luck, dar. in my experience it's harder to lose friends than find them - and your free time can become almost non-existent. if that's what you want, then go for it, but just keep your wits about you
