I hope you are coping well with your northern winter . . .
ha ha!! yes! i am no prude, but these days, when there is so much filth around, an innocent 'dad joke' is like a primrose growing amongst horseweed. the problem with foul language is that its shock effect becomes diluted with constant use, and is subsequently incorporated into everyday speech. writers were earlier imprisoned for publishing toilet talk - but now it's normal to not react. i am not suggesting this development is good or bad from a moralistic point of view, only that i fear for how difficult it could soon be to really upset anyone - and that's not gonna be any fun.

stay well, alan, and please pop in again when you have a minute. always good to see your messages. meanwhile, i leave you with a couple of innocent sketchbook pages as an antidote to the 'chelsea hotel' one.

i am indeed coping with the norwegian winter. this weekend a drive down to sogn & fjordane is on the agenda, so i hope the roads are ok.

thanks! these sketchbook pages are a perfect pastime for a lazy person who gets bored quickly. the great thing about making pictures these days is the less perfect they are the more they are considered as 'artistic' - one simply can't lose ;)

G, the reason I am not an artist is because I lack the ability to determine the few details that will make a drawing recognizable and obviate the need to draw many. For example, asked to draw a tomato, I would concentrate on the shape of the fruit when, as may be seen in your Warhol take-off, the leaves are what makes a tomato immediately recognizable (and of course the color). It must be great to have an avocation that is portable and can be carried with you wherever you go.

this is a flattering and difficult message to respond to, curt - because i doubt that you and i are very different. inspiration is a mixture of several things, but mostly ideas and enthusiasm - and it's an idea that is the biggest and most elusive, albeit crucial ingredient; it gets easier from then on. all i can do is tell you how i personally acquire mental stimulation and encourage it to play me a winning card. you might give it a try.

first i tidy the kitchen so that everything is in its place, not even an unwashed teaspoon is left on the working top. this is so important, because being away from home is the key, and when i walk back through that door after returning i cannot be distracted by the sight of housework needing to be done. it is essential that time is not wasted; inspiration does not hang around waiting.

so, i go out and socialise as much as possible, anywhere there is light, life and activity. meetings, the shopping mall, meet friends, visit galleries, museums, attend lectures, concerts, whatever - all the time the brain picking up information and impressions. a tidy kitchen and warm apartment awaits my homecoming, the doorbell and phone are switched off, i stick loud and lively music on (anything from reggae to rihanna), throw a couple of ginger or peppermint teabags into a teapot - and the conditions should be perfectly suitable for any creative process to begin. an imagination that is wild with all the material that has been soaked up can then be set free to find its way into a physical picture.

of course, some people seem to just have a natural talent for making pictures, but i don't buy that. we are all just flesh and blood, admittedly with varying levels of potential, but i am a good example of someone with average intelligence. one would need to search long and hard to find a more ordinary person than myself. i do carry a sketchbook with me, but prefer to work at home with warmth, music and hot tea. if a person has confidence, is able to think 'outside of the box', is positive and willing to practice and fail - eventually they are walking on easy street.

i was supposed to be in sogn & fjordane this weekend, but plans were changed. maybe next weekend. tomorrow (monday) afternoon i am meeting juanita when she finishes at the hospital and we are going for lunch at a bistro. then i am accompanying her to our little airport on a nearby island - one of the few flat areas big enough for a runway. she will be in oslo for one week, but we stay in touch via messenger, whatsapp or SMS (texting). we were together last night too, but a bunch of other people were also there.

stay well, curt - and don't forget that everyone needs to give themselves a treat every day. this world can be a challenging existence, and we all deserve something nice :)

Ps: i should add that no one is ever obligated to respond to my messages, even though it is nice when someone does - just never feel any pressure. i was born with a communicative personality and enjoy interacting with people. when talking one should always obey the 20-second rule to give the other person an opportunity to speak, unless there is something special that needs to be said. i've probably mentioned this before. i don't mind when the other person breaks that rule and talks beyond 20-seconds, even if it's simple chit-chat, because i am an excellent listener too - which is why people like being with me. when writing no rules apply, however, because the reader can always take a break.

Just in case anyone does not yet know, Geoffrey has given his art works some interesting titles.
As you view these masterpieces, allow your cursor to hover over the picture and the title will be revealed.
IMHO seeing these enhances the overall viewing experience.
Also contemplating the reason for these titles adds to the pleasure.

Keep posting, please, Geoffrey.

thank you, alan - although art works or masterpieces might not be descriptions a critic would use. the keanu reeves picture, for example, is simply a 'dash off' on the inside of a weetabix packet.

most talented illustrators/artists are recognisable even without a signature; their work is like a fingerprint making them immediately identifiable. my pictures lack such distinction. i see a connection here and there, only natural after producing so many, but there is too often no particular style - and that is really what is needed.

fortunately none of that matters, because i just like making pictures, have zero ambition, do not take myself seriously and enjoy being undisciplined. the fact that you like the images i post here is unbelievably encouraging, alan - so thank you again.

for as long as the webmaster tolerates my efforts, this 'gallery' will remain active :)

Geoffrey wrote: Mon Jan 09, 2023 9:38 pm i too love that part with the spilt wine. it goes everywhere! (see below!)

virtually every book by or about leonard is free on the net, and george orwell, but you have to know how to bypass the pop-ups and blocks. also, the file sharing sites continually get closed down and start up again elsewhere. english language 'beautiful losers' is currently on liechtenstein's 'library genesis' (libgen.li) - i just checked. i don't know how computer savvy you are, but if you have some decent software you can download and convert to any format you wish.

nice surprise to come home and see somebody has written. i have been with jaunita, one of my best friends who works at the hospital. we get on so well together. i have never known anyone with such a warm personality, no hang-ups whatsoever, never see a red flag no matter how much time we spend together. a lady like that is seldom indeed. i think the angels must have arranged for our paths to cross, a reward for having good karma in a world where people can be hurtful and hostile.

stay well! :)
-----------------------------------------------------------
The long white table shone with the pride of silver and crystal and early spring flowers, and for a minor second her eyes swam in the splendor of the occasion. Handsome servants poured wine into glasses that resembled long-stem roses. A hundred candle flames echoed and re-echoed in a hundred pieces of silver cutlery as the fragrant guests worked over their slabs of meat, and for a minor second the flashing multiple suns hurt her eyes, burned away her appetite. With a tiny abrupt movement which she did not command, she knocked over her glass of wine. She stared at the whale-shaped stain, frozen with shame.
- It is nothing, said the Marquis. It is nothing, child.
Catherine Tekakwitha sat motionless. The Marquis returned to his conversation. It concerned a new military invention which was being developed in France, the bayonet. The stain spread quickly.
- Even the tablecloth is thirsty for this good wine, joked the Marquis. Don't be frightened, child. There are no punishments for spilling a glass of wine.
Despite the suave activity of several servants the stain continued to discolor larger and larger areas of the tablecloth. Conversation dwindled as the diners directed their attention to its remarkable progress. It now claimed the entire tablecloth. Talk ceased altogether as a silver vase turned purple and the pink flowers it contained succumbed to the same influence. A beautiful lady gave a cry of pain as her fine hand turned purple A total chromatic metamorphosis took place in a matter of minutes. Wails and oaths resounded through the purple hall as faces, clothes, tapestries, and furniture displayed the same deep shade. Beyond the high windows there were islands of snow glinting in the moonlight. The entire company, servants and masters, had directed its gaze outside, as if to find beyond the contaminated hall some reassurance of a multicolored universe. Before their eyes these drifts of spring snow darkened into shades of spilled wine, and the moon itself absorbed the imperial hue.
Geoffrey, I found my copy of "Beautiful Losers." The ending to the spilled wine story that you left out, and that I always found quite humorous because it is so massively inadequate in light of the damage done, is:

"...and the moon itself absorbed the imperial hue. Catherine stood up slowly. 'I guess I owe you all an apology.""

i am well-known to always respond to people's messages because - as previously mentioned - i have an incurable communicative personality.
although parts of 'beautiful losers' is not for leonard's priggish fans, that 'wine' episode is one of its many highlights.

call them what you will: permanent felt tips, magic markers, textas or sharpies, but in norway they are just 'tusj' pens :)
the only thing that kills the demon is love.jpg
i just felt the need to air something before i go out, because it's been on my mind for a while, and i do like to communicate - not just post pictures all the time. you see, as a portraitist i maybe notice facial features that ordinary people fail to pick up on - unfortunate genetical attributes hiding in plain sight.

for example: variation in lips. some people have thin, cruel lips, some even have no discernible lips at all - like an orangutan. when putting on lipstick, ladies know that to improve their attractiveness they often need to slightly exaggerate the height of their upper lip, while making sure to retain the 'V'-shape, or so-called 'cupid's bow'. myself, i am blessed insofar as i come from reasonably good stock, with naturally well-shaped, kissable lips, like in the cliff richard song. ( https://youtu.be/OD9mKnW3D30 )

please don't think i am boasting, but the reason i have so many close lady friends is not exclusively because of my creativeness and personality, but also because of the sensuality of my appearance. i cannot stress enough how good mouth hygiene, including fresh breath, clean white and well looked after teeth, are the alpha/omega of giving a positive impression during social interaction. having nice full lips - and i am not talking about ugly botox effects - is just the icing on the cake.

tonight i am meeting a new lady who has asked if the two of us can spend a little time together, and naturally i said yes - on condition that other people are present. i know from experience that when they get me alone they try to take advantage. regina is on holiday here from tunisia, staying with mutual friends - and has been looking forward to seeing me in the flesh. her name is pronounced 'regeena'. i know that in canada they say it differently, making it rhyme with a part of the female body, but that is not cool and should at all costs be avoided.

well, i need now to shower and get myself ready for a social evening. i use moroccan black soap with unscented organic argan oil, plus my preferred cologne: dior homme.

stay well :)
