A 4 hour journey to see Barnet, the Mighty Bees, lose to Northwich Victoria. Now I have to wait until Tuesday or next Saturday until we win the Championship. Look at the sadness on my girls' faces. They could inspire several Leonard Cohen songs or epic poems.

Mickey - your girls are gorgeous. I didn't know you could still stand at football matches I thought it was compulsory to sit down now. I used to go and watch Chelsea in my youth and stand in the Shed. Wander down Kings Road and go to the World's End. Oh those were the days and it only cost 2s 6d to get in. Nostalgia ain't what it used to be.

You are a very,very cruel man taking your daughters to see Barnet..but then again they probably couldn't see over those big men in front. Aren't true supporters supposed to carry little ones over their heads to the front so that they can see properly??
I used to take my sons to watch Coventry City when they had been naughty..they are now fine, upstanding citizens. I guess you are using the same ploy.

my youth and your youth may not have been far apart, Paula! I too then supported Chelsea and went to home matches and stood near the Shed (not actually in it, I admit).

I had no interest in soccer from my twenties until about 15 years ago. Then one New Year's Day, my brother invited me to go to Barnet. He is an orthodox Jew so this was a rare match day for him mid-week. (I don't think he has ever been since).

I went, I saw a hopeless lost cause and fell bang in love with the Club. I began to sponsor them although later turned down a Directorship because the Chairman told me "yes, Michael, you will have to wear a suit each match and no, Michael, you can't continue to shout at the Manager".

The kids were of course indoctrinated as appropriate. David has made endless trips over the years from Denmark to follow the Bees. Actually there is a Norwegian Barnet fan club because in their language, as in Danish, "Barnet" translates as "the child"!

Rikki and Tori have no escape as they live at home ( a few miles from the Sacred Turf of Underhill). In fact, poor Tori, born at home was in a Bees babygro within an hour of her entry into this World.

And as the years passed they realised that the songs had been sanitised for them

but they survived and Kathy is just so happy when we have a long day trip out, so she is a supporter in her own way as well.

Pete, your tacitcs are a well recognised form of child training and not to be dismissed lightly. But following a small team like Barnet teaches my children not to expect success as their right, to learn to accept failure and excellent lessons of that type. And then you get a magic season like this and we are all absurdly happy, hee hee.

Coventry City is their nickname the Canaries? Chelsea of course were the Blues and my other passion were the Red Devils.

stirke me down, guvn'r, we *were* of the same era! Apart from Bonetti it was the H team, Ron and Alan (Chopper) Harris, Hinton, Hollins, Hutchinson, loads of other H geezers I have temporarily forgotten.

I thought they sang "Yashin" which would have the advantage of being accurate and rhyming?

I have been looking for the photo of Tori and me at the training ground when she was a week old and was suitably attired in the colours, Black and Amber Army! Can't find it, meantime here is one of me thrashing David last year for the insolent suggestion that even Barnet weren't quite as good as Chelsea.

by the time that happens we will have a new ground and be able to fit in you and the rest of Matlock. current capacity is about 4,500, wicked slope on the pitch, 3 years grace after promotion to sort it out.

I think it was Yashin. It was in my dark distant past when I was almost a football hooligan. I was stunned to discover football tickets now cost about £40 each. Too expensive to be a football hooligan now!!!

name your club of choice and I can arrange a free ride hooligan day out for you, no problem!

It costs me £6 to watch Matlock Town...and it's a lot more exciting than watching many of the premiership matches... and there's a raffle at half time

The first thing that popped up on that web site was "new stand appeal" is this some covert way of encouraging people to donate to Matlock FC?

How can you have a raffle at half time and what are the prizes?

The club are raising money for a new stand through various ventures..the old one is past it's sell by date. I used to stand in it when I was a kid. There are now wooden benches in it but the view isn't brilliant because of all the people who prefer to stand at pitch side in front of the stand.

The raffle... a box of chocs and a bottle of wine... 2 prizes.. I haven't won yet but I'll let you know when I do.
