To a Lord Upon a Queenly Progress
An English Queen famed for high intelligence,
mercurial wit and eye for the flirt, jousts
of word play and briary argument, if lustful,
will thence to bed. But many a daring gentleman
of court whom fame and taste for power inveigled
to win her heart (and throne) must find himself
in chains for such presumption. Place then, oneself
upon a queenly progress, or the drawing into
any species of crown, and see how its intrigue,
gossip, speculation, rumours and lies, the choosing
of a faction, to make and unmake enemies will
nothing do but guarantee destruction.
The cunning Lord that greets a queenly progress
to his castle, fold, farm and kin, must dissemble,
seek to remain a mere shadow, play the simpleton,
the unlettered awkward peasant, and live.
