quick pic of leonard, just for a change

I know that you enjoy the attention, and so I will post a comment!

This is another wonderful likeness of Leonard, and I love the colours. It strikes me as being reminiscent of portraits by another painter, something I have seen in major galleries/art museums, but I can't recall who it may have been. Any ideas?

thank you for commenting, lisa. there was a canadian expressionist painter called philip iverson who often used much colour, but he was far more gifted than i can hope to be.

regarding your opening sentence: most people enjoy a certain amount of attention, some even to the point of dying their hair blue or having outrageous facial piercings. my sister received most parental attention in my youth because she was 4 years older than myself. leonard would have experienced exactly the same with esther. meal time conversations exclusively concentrate on what the older sibling is going to do with their life. can you blame those in our situation for craving attention as we grow older? "prick me, do i not bleed?" what can i do, stitched up in this straight-jacket? a young boy's mind carrying into adulthood a heavy filing cabinet filled with episodes of rejection and neglect. in family photo albums he is just a background actor, excellent school reports receive but a cursory glance, he is the invisible man, no hope of ever winning any competition. ostracism hurts, and attention is the only ointment that provides a measure of relief. when someone comments on my work, whether it be praise or criticism, it is like a carnation being put into my lapel, small petals of light that shine. so, perhaps you can understand how much i appreciate you taking the time to comment, dear lisa

Philip Iverson -- I was not actually familiar with his work (he died so young -- what a shame). There is another artist, Derek Russell, whose portraits use a lot of colour. However, it was neither of them that I was thinking of: it would have been a much older painting, perhaps one of the Old Masters or one of their contemporaries. Perhaps it will come to me eventually, and/or I may stumble upon it/them again.

thank you for this. i have just been looking at his excellent work! thank you also for the bouquet of carnations, lisa. i was very moved by that warm gesture, made a little tear escape.

I like what appears to be the look of concern in his eyes.

Also like how you've still created the landscape of his face using so many colours.

Great work indeed! I have no gift for painting at all, so I really admire people who can paint like that! Amazing!

believe me, you can do it. maybe not today or tomorrow, but in a short time, depending on your enthusiasm and how much you practice.

by the way, don't be put off by the lack of comments here. many people read you but are unable to respond. they are what i call 'wallflowers'; a voiceless mass of people possessing little or no personality. they comprise an audience too timid to clap or boo for fear of being noticed. it is a sort of social anxiety, afraid of expressing an opinion that will be ridiculed, afraid of confrontation. they are good to have, because they never attack, give praise or criticism. i think of them as patients in a coma who can hear but not react. i have also thought of myself as a host talking into a microphone on a late night radio show, entertaining lonely people in their bedsitters. i know they are there, and i expect no feedback. if you believe in yourself you don't need any interaction anyway. so, just keep on posting. there are one or two shy lurkers who occasionally get the courage to come out from hiding and write several words, and it's nice when that happens

Thank you, I am not put off, there are many things worse than that I always say, if there is even one person enjoying it, it is worth writing.. And you see, the most positive comment was your one and it got deleted accidentally:)
