Re: His Voice Is Not A Voice
I keep getting snagged on this poem. In part because I want to argue with part of it –(that can be a good thing) and in part because I feel confused by the Joni Mitchel part.
Where I really get stuck at Joni Mitchel on Hydra. At least that’s how it reads to me. I actually stop reading each time at that point and wonder - is this part of a fantasy that N. is having or is this one of the ‘facts’ N is giving about Leonard Cohen? On my first read I actually left the poem to google ‘Joni Mitchel on Hydra’.
Sue used to have a friend here (I think he was some type of ironing groupie) that could write a decent poem in under 10 minutes, but frankly most people can’t do that very well. (stream of conscious people excluded of course)
In an other poem you mention that Leonard will sometimes hone/nurture a poem for years, so I’m guessing that the intent in your poem is to highlight a difference between N and Leonard - N doesn’t have the same resolve, he doesn’t write to the senses as Leonard does – yet throughout many of these pieces he finds connections with the figure/image of Leonard.
The series reminds me a bit of Julie and Julia.

The part I want to argue with seems like some type of weird poetry fact, 'Poems are not written over months, years but in hours.'Poems are not written over months, years but in hours.
I want to be done with it. The idea lasts only so long,
from the head to the table. Are there lines between
the lines? Do you see the humour? I’m not trying
to be sensational. Only commenting on what is real …

Hi Cate. Thanks for all of your replies.
His voice, his words is not meant to be taken literally.
(that he has no voice, no words)
The intent is to convey the concept that a Jew does not
speak the word God. His voice is not a voice because
it is unspeakable. His voice is beyond our comprehension.
Something like that!
