Hi,
Here's another video clip of Guy Clark performing the same song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seONAflxevI. Ronaldson, I like the
clip you linked to; am familiar with it and have watced it numerous times.
Interesting that Guy Clark appraises his own performance (at the end of the clip)
as "almost." I very much like seeing the picture that he displayed at the
beginning of the clip and that he told the backstory of the song and
picture. What probably brought about the "almost," however, rather
than something better, was that the actual physical picture was right
there and that he was opening his eyes a bit while performing the song,
probably looking down at the photo. In the clip I linked to, his eyes are closed,
no evidence of the actual photo is present, and maybe because of that a better
performance with a more intimate connection by Guy Clark to the song. Eyes
closed can be an aid to seeing (connecting) internally. When I think of Townes Van
Zandt videos, I see Townes with his eyes closed. A song that comes to mind,
bringing about a trinity of connected songwriters and continuing on the subject of the
mind's eye, is Blaze Foley's "Picture Cards Can't Picture You":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRtcEKbUifU. (The line "I saw daylight in your eyes"
is golden.) Don't know if Blaze Foley performed the song with eyes open. I imagine he didn't.
The song contains these words:
"But I can see you like you are
When I just close my eyes".
