A Thousand Kisses Deep (impromptu)

I actually posted this video almost exactly a year ago but for some reason I can’t remember seeing the following amusing incident until now. It was filmed on 10th June 2012 at McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, California, just before Leonard’s, and co-incidentally, Jackson Browne’s tour was about to begin.

Val McCallum and Alex are sharing a moment or two with the “pricing ticket” on his violin! They are both laughing (and so am I) at the huge label swinging around in the breeze as he’s playing. Val even checks out the price! Maybe Alex was trying out a new violin from the shop or they lent it to him for the song as he was an impromptu guest artist. I would find all that flapping totally distracting but it just seems to be a source of mirth for both of them! I love the rapport between them and the casualness of it all.

“The stage got real crowded when Val and Jackson brought out Spanish guitarist Javier Mas and Moldavian violinist Alex Bublitchi, two musicians from Leonard Cohen's current touring band. Out of courtesy, Blake Mills sat on the stage floor after giving his chair to the more senior Javier. What followed was pure magic. Their rendition of Cohen's "A Thousand Kisses Deep", sung by Jackson with the full participation of all other musicians, ranks among the finest performances I have ever witnessed. Just imagine - the lead guitar role shifting seamlessly between the three devilishly great guitar players present on the stage - from Val to Blake to Javier and so on, it was divine, and so was Jackson's singing, and when the song ended, the crowd was on its feet to give the musicians a rarely seen mid-concert standing ovation. Funny thing - the best song of the evening does not appear on the set list”.

This is a wonderful cover of A Thousand Kisses Deep by Jackson Browne with other excellent musicians including Javier.
There appears to be some interesting music improvisation happening as well.

btw ...... I love McCabe’s Guitar Shop advertisement:

The largest selection of stringed things
to make music with in California.
We have rentals for the cautious, lessons for the eager,
truth-telling for the fearful, repairs for the clumsy,
concerts for the devoted, and free coffee for all!

I missed your original posting Bev. As I started watching, I thought 'Oh nooo, is it going to be fuzzy all the way through?' and then mercifully the picture became crystal clear.

What a beautiful arrangement! Sheer artistry! Gorgeous!

Thank you for reposting this Bev. Even the tag incident doesn't take anything away from this performance.

Warmest regards,
Mary

My pleasure Mary :D

I had originally posted the video in Alex's initial thread in News. I'm glad you said the fuzziness clears because I forgot to say it!
Yes, such an expressive musical combination. The tag incident was a bonus feature!

Also no video but a repeat (tagless) performance of A Thousand Kisses Deep happened a couple of weeks later at the same place.

“Then there's always the question about unannounced guests - will there be any? And yes, last night there were a few. Once again, Jackson Browne popped in as "Browne Shit" and delivered an outstanding four-song set that opened with Ween's "Pretty Girl", followed by Jackson's own "Here Comes Those Tears Again" and "Running On Empty" and culminated with the playing of Leonard Cohen's gorgeous "A Thousand Kisses Deep", with additional support from Spanish guitarist Javier Mas and Moldavian violinist Alex Bublitchi, both from Leonard Cohen's band”.
And a bonus photo of a special person in the audience on that night :)
