TOM, NICK & LENNY
- a night of musical melancholia in aid of the Red Cross.
On Saturday 7th April an impeccable collection of some of Yorkshire's finest acoustic acts gather to pay lipservice to the esteemed troubadour triumvirate of Tom Waits, Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen. And all in the name of charity.
Each act will perform a set that includes a cover version by each of the aforementioned songwriting icons.
All proceeds from the show will be donated to the Red Cross and will act as a curtain-raising event ahead of the Red Cross Week (6th-12 May).

The idea for the night comes from award-winning stand-up comedian and Hungarian Lanterns singer-songwriter Anthony J Brown who says 'I've always had a penchant for some time honoured lyrical Gallows humour coupled with a slither of lovelorn wisdom and thought that a night that celebrated this whilst showcasing some splendid local acoustic would be a winner that would attract a discerning level of punter. Beneath my velvet cloak of misanthropy I'm actually a charitable soul and having worked with the estimable Max Newton and the lovely Red Cross folk at two of their annual Giggle Aid fund raising comedy shows I've learnt a lot about the fabulous work that the Red Cross undertakes all over the globe so they struck me as a very worthy recipient. And in the midst of this mordant and melodic wit it will festoon the performers in a Ready Brek style warm glow to know that money will be raised for such a deserving cause'

Named after a lyric in Leonard Cohen's 'Take This Waltz', Hungarian Lanterns are three besuited chaps playing piano, acoustic guitar, mandolin and bass (not all at the same time - you do the maths). Their music is poignant and full of melodic minor key tunes laced with evocative lyrics. They are fronted by Sheffield based stand-up Anthony J Brown whose dark and twisted comedic sensibility is represented in many a romantically-tinged caustic couplet.

Gardinski's music paints searing visions of dark passion, torchlit paranoia and occasional heartburn, to conjure up an unforgettable blend of Edwardian elegance and downright decadence.
Whether performing as a lone troubadour, armed only with Spanish guitar and a devilish look in his eye, or as a multiheaded musical kraken drawing upon a rich pool of local talent to flesh out the bones of his songs, Gardinski is first and foremost a "Showman Extraordinaire" (in the words of The Guardian), and his mystique is fast becoming the stuff of legend, even among those who have yet to experience his gravel-throated delivery in all its maverick charm.
Accompanied for this once-in-a-lifetime event by the beautiful harmonies of a backing trio comprising South Yorkshire's sweetest female vocalists (each one a remarkable artist in her own right), this looks set to be a night to remember.
Gardinski is currently working in close collaboration with upcoming visual artist Kayleigh@ArmyOfInk on a series of works which incorporate the visceral imagery of her art with the band's pioneering work on the cutting edge of music.

The band have been likened in turns to Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, Karl Wallinger, Jacques Brel and Warren Zevon and have recently released their critically acclaimed debut long playing cd 'Souls'.

'The first moment I saw this young musician I was transfixed in a way I haven't been by a Harrogate performer in a long time, amazed and spellbound by this amazing singer' - The Harrogate Advertiser
James Ewan Tait was born in Rinteln, Germany, in 1991 and moved to Harrogate, North Yorkshire, that same year. Eleven years later, James bought his first guitar from Argos with the money that he received for his Birthday. He was taught to play it by local blues legend Jed Thomas over the course of the next few years and performed in a number of bands of a variety of genres throughout his teens. James first began to take singing seriously at the age of 15, and at 16 began performing his solo compositions at school concerts and posting rough, bedroom recordings of them on MySpace. At 18, having built up a half hour set comprised almost entirely of original material, James responded to a newspaper advertisement seeking artists to perform at a new acoustic night run by local performer Ade Payne; he became something of a regular act at the night until late September 2009 when he moved to Sheffield to study Psychology. Early 2011 James reluctantly took part in a 'battle of the singer/songwriters' in a bar in Leeds to raise money for Barnardo’s and won a day in Soundworks recording studios with producer Will Jackson. In the spring of 2011 James abandoned his study of Psychology and spent that summer gigging fairly intensely around bars, clubs, festivals and anywhere else that would have him in Sheffield. At 21, James Ewan Tait is currently enjoying a somewhat bohemian, hand to mouth existence in Sheffield, performing on the odd occasion that he is approached, and suffering from his first serious writer's block.
