Her Dreams

The girl stands still while the breath of some goddess
Ripples past her short brown hair
She is always thinking these days of Brazil
How she'll dance on hot earth when she gets there
Her elbows red and raw
From pressing onto the window
Her mother and father keep explaining the future
Demanding that she should entirely agree
She has no ideas about who she wants to be
Or how that could matter -
She sees the world literally
It throws her dreams into light relief
Where they float in the air
Indefinitely
The girl suspects something
That will never be disclosed
The meaning of her fear of insects
Her love of small animals
She is twice as tall as normal
For a girl of her age
She slept, when she was younger, under majestic trees
And stretched out her hands
To their heads in her dreams.
Ripples past her short brown hair
She is always thinking these days of Brazil
How she'll dance on hot earth when she gets there
Her elbows red and raw
From pressing onto the window
Her mother and father keep explaining the future
Demanding that she should entirely agree
She has no ideas about who she wants to be
Or how that could matter -
She sees the world literally
It throws her dreams into light relief
Where they float in the air
Indefinitely
The girl suspects something
That will never be disclosed
The meaning of her fear of insects
Her love of small animals
She is twice as tall as normal
For a girl of her age
She slept, when she was younger, under majestic trees
And stretched out her hands
To their heads in her dreams.
