This youtube video is from 11-24-96. TVZ was dead 5 weeks later, 1-1-97. This might have been his last or one of his last concerts. He trembles, he's bent and he's broken but its poignant. He was only 52 at the time.

Tomorrow the mountains will be sleeping
Silent 'neath their blanket green and blue
I shall hear the silence they are keeping
I'll bring all their promises to you

Hi Kush,

The poignancy of the performance suggests to me that Townes' knew he was near the end of his
life. I don't discount the possibility that he'd not minded being bent and broken in service of his
art. The performance is heartbreaking and beautiful, but more heartbreaking than beautiful.
A less heartbreaking performance of the same song appears here:

Longevity is an art that too many creative geniuses don't master.

Steven mentioned the song Marie on another thread. A superb performance on Dutch TV from 1990.

Townes Van Zandt was posthumously inducted into the Texas Heritage Songwriters Hall of Fame this month along with Lyle Lovett and Robert Earl Keen - not sure about this but it might be the only honor he's ever received.

Townes last concert was Dec. 3rd, 1996 at The Borderline in London, England. There’s audio of the whole show posted on YouTube, just search “Townes Van Zandt The Borderline London”
