Summer Ode
Summer quiet, summer loud,
Summer modest, summer proud,
Summer gather’d as a crowd
To show where we belong;
Summer fancy, summer cheap,
Summer meant to never sleep,
Summer bound to laugh and weep
A life-defining song;
Summer hot yet summer cold,
Summer for us to behold,
Summer spoken but untold,
Heard but misunderstood;
Summer which we can’t allow,
Summer with us anyhow,
Summer here and summer now—
What could be would be good.
Summer days and summer hours,
Summer weeds, summer flowers,
Summer where sunshine powers
All moving life at dawn;
Summer still in tranquil nest,
Summer perch’d above the rest,
Summer prone to be depress’d,
Tho’ once the sun has gone
Summer friends, summer lovers—
Summer where night discovers
Summer better than others,
Summer better than none.
Summer beer and summer wine,
Summer spirits so divine,
Summer on the grass supine,
Bygone but not begun;
Summer long yet summer short,
Summer which we might support,
Summer compell’d to escort
The likelihood of loss
To where summer invited,
Summer made to feel slighted,
Summer left undecided
On how to bear that cross.
Summer lonesome thinking thoughts,
Summer twisted into knots,
Summer likely casting lots
To make these verdicts clear—
Summer tho’ still on trial;
Summer making things worthwhile,
Summer with you and your smile,
Summer without you near.
Summer quiet, summer loud,
Summer modest, summer proud,
Summer gather’d as a crowd
To show where we belong;
Summer fancy, summer cheap,
Summer meant to never sleep,
Summer bound to laugh and weep
A life-defining song;
Summer hot yet summer cold,
Summer for us to behold,
Summer spoken but untold,
Heard but misunderstood;
Summer which we can’t allow,
