Every Step You Take

Another poem I wrote while crossing Spain on el camino de Santiago, an ancient pilgrims route.
across the mountain top so high
across the open plain
where the winds blow wild and high
with the storms and rain
an ancient road beneath the feet
that travels by stream and lake
where no promise can compete
with every step you take
across the lands across the sea
coming from afar
to stand with eucalyptus trees
and gaze upon a star
and dream of better worlds to come
where hearts won't ever break
the measure of mankind to plumb
with every step you take
traveling with a heavy load
to see what can't be seen
and there with ghosts upon the road
to go where life has been
and hear the voices of ages past
cry out go forth and partake
in the memories that have passed
with every step you take
strangers on this road of life
some seek and some have found
and here within this toil and strife
some freed while others bound
and in those moments when life will pause
and with the bread you break
and send the ripples that are caused
with every step you take
across the mountain top so high
across the open plain
where the winds blow wild and high
with the storms and rain
an ancient road beneath the feet
that travels by stream and lake
where no promise can compete
with every step you take
across the lands across the sea
coming from afar
to stand with eucalyptus trees
and gaze upon a star
and dream of better worlds to come
where hearts won't ever break
the measure of mankind to plumb
with every step you take
traveling with a heavy load
to see what can't be seen
and there with ghosts upon the road
to go where life has been
and hear the voices of ages past
cry out go forth and partake
in the memories that have passed
with every step you take
strangers on this road of life
some seek and some have found
and here within this toil and strife
some freed while others bound
and in those moments when life will pause
and with the bread you break
and send the ripples that are caused
with every step you take
