Give us this day

I wrote this poem after 9/11.. .. Anyway, I'm thinking it seems appropriate now, given all that officially [and unofficially] is going on..

Give us this day

Give us this day
everything
everything the wounded saw
those dark days when havoc
drove them to surrender

Give us this day
everything
everything those mothers clung to
when war was at hand; when the land
grew barren
when all hope left the skies

Give us this day
everything
everything that’s in my heart
and mind
now that war is again at hand

everything
everything that’s begun
from everything that was
all the absurdity
in everything that’s great
and arrogant
and failing

Give us this day
our daily bread
the wounded never of it
tasted

Give us this day
our daily bread
those few
who always come to
take it (who always come
to say they’ve
made it)

take us this day
from the darkest of skies
take us this day
that small ring of light

take us
that crown
that deity
that savior

.. you know, you're lucky I gotta' go in a few, 'cause

actually, I have no official retort. Oh, but my therapist finally accepted the fact that I wake up screaming "applez," not "applause," and she wondered out loud why that might be, and all I could think to say was

.. well, I think you by now. Obviously I told her I was attempting to learn French.
