Pocket Watch

Inspired, somewhat, by "Famous Blue Raincoat".
Stars in the morning at the end of the winter
Haven't heard from you in many months.
Where are you beating, away from the river
The smell of the water doesn't follow you here.
And I said, there with your watch in my hand
That I had too much of your plans, but
How can I remember this
You called, telling me life was so hard, yet
You loved where you lived and I just stood
There with your watch in my hand
Pocket watch in my hand
So you're moving in fast lanes without any tires
So far away down that telephone line.
Do you remember green days on the shoreside
Walking through forests as old as your dreams.
And I said, there with your watch in my hand
That I had too much of your plans, but
How can I remember this
You left, leaving simplicity behind, and
I couldn't move from my grief
There with your watch in my hand
Pocket watch in my hand
Can't seem to see you, away in that moonscape
You kept me at a distance too great for tears
Bright lights on the corner, life moves on your face
Why can't I come with you into your space?
And I said, there with your watch in my hand
That I had too much of your plans, but
How can I remember this
Moved on, you stretched too far out of reach, can't
You stay here with me in false dreams of reality
God knows, I've held you back for so long
Kept you from flying away where you
Receive your accolades, go
Grow, change, forget.
But
But.
When you can, spare a free thought for me
Still standing 'neath that birth-tree
They planted for you so that you could be great.
And I said, there with your watch in my hand
That I had too much of your plans, but
How can I remember this
Tick, tock, more of my life I have wasted, and
You told me forget it, I've tasted
Where I want to be - so keep it.
Keep standing there
There with your watch in my hand
Pocket watch in my hand
Wait
