I think this is a lovely poem, to me this poem says
Even though you know it’s a love based on uncertainty you are willing to take the chance and despite all their imperfections shown to you, and the walls and defences they put up, their inner beauty is instantly recognisable.

I love this line
‘For at the dawn of words’
Greatest line I’ve heard for describing the absolute beginning of something.

I think life’s ‘Beautiful People’, despite their sometime protective shells, are always instantly recognisable…

Thanks Karren,

No matter how you are, on rare occasion you meet someone who 'sees you' straight away. Who really gets who you are essentially. That is definitely an uncertain feeling in many ways, that can be scarey, but I believe it's a wonderful thing in most cases.

Talking and being open (holding up a mirror) does not always mean ruining the mystery either, it depends on who you are and what you want I guess.

I love the Leonard line and then she clearly understood if he was fire, oh then she must be wood - it's one of my favourite lyrics ever.

A mirror can mean many things...the truth (of someone - who they are) being recognised immediately, and/or (in this poem it's - as well as..) parts of both people being reflected in each other, similarities that make up some of that which draws two people together in mutual recognition in the first place.
Whether it be that which includes the type of sexual attraction that goes way beyond just physical aspects, or if it be that of platonic friendship, - even with fixed enemies... but I don't think that this poem is about enemies :D

Alsiony,

I think it is very rare to find that someone who gets you straight away. Through all your ‘Winding veils’ and ‘Proven defences’ and yes it is scary when you find someone like that, be it lover or friend…there’s nowhere to hide…but then you don’t need to if you find someone like that…

And I agree that just because you are open and truthful to someone it doesn’t take away the mystery, we are complex creatures…we don’t even know ourselves!

They say opposites attract, but with experience, I think this is a short term thing…I sometimes think if you find that reflection or that simmarlarity, you’ve got it nailed…if you know what I mean…

Always enjoy your poems and often get a lot from them…

Alsiony,

I like that poem very much, it is very honest, open and direct.
I think we all believe we have 'proven defences', only to be knocked back in that assumption and find we are vulnerable after all.

Thanks Gerry,
Yes I agree with you, but I think for some people their defences can become a particular kind of affliction at times - and if this is the way you are, or can be, then it is sometimes a lot to get over just to begin with, nevermind the fact that it may all come tumbling down at some point in the future as well. In any kind of relationship.
When someone immediately sees through it all, and understands just how you tick, the sense of 'meant to be' or inevitability attached to it, can be a source of strength. Especially to those who, (even though it may not seem like it at all) are actually particularly private with their inner most feelings etc :)
