Field Of Dreams.

Field of Dreams

I lay upon the soft green grass
And gaze up at the sky above.
I dream of all that I could be,
Of passion and forbidden love.

I smell the scent of new mown hay.
I think of all I could have done.
I feel the breeze across the field
Whilst lying in the midday sun.

I watch the birds as they take flight,
I long to have their freedom too.
To live my life just as I wish
And do just what I want to do.

I see a leaf float down to earth
It has no choice its path is set.
I feel my life is on that course…
I’m not prepared to go there yet.

The trees calm down they do not move,
It’s almost like time's standing still.
My life’s suspended in mid air
And begging me to take my fill.

I dream you’re lying by my side,
I long to know your gentle touch,
To feel your breath upon my skin,
Is something that I yearn so much.

I’ll close my eyes and hold the dream.
I’ll linger a few moments more.
Let fantasy fulfil my need
And give me what I’m longing for.

But when I leave this field of dreams
Reality will surely win,
And drag me back to all I loathe.
Monotony begins again!

Excellent poem Karren.

I would imagine every one of us can relate to these sentiments.

I certainly can.

I love this poem because of what I see the many contradictions in it . You speak of being free but then you long to be with someone . At first I was going to ask you to explain the contradictions but I think it is better not to know and therefore keep the intrigue alive

I love houw you capture the longing and then startkly cntrast it with the return to monotony, and how quickly it descends into that as your poem ends.

Hi Yorkshire Lad

Thank you for your comments. It's not so much a contradiction, as I do indeed crave my freedom. But maybe it's just the freedom to move on or the freedom to be what i can be, not what i'm expected to be. (maybe that's just selfish of me - but i think i deserve my time now).

Hi lizzytysh

I think many people long for something, and sometimes they will settle for the safe option (the comfort zone) even monotony. But sometimes that's not enough.

It seems that the person the Narrator is dreaming of represents a love that is freeing and makes them feel light whereas reality is a situation that is confining and restrictive (perhaps smothering) - heavy.

I like the sense of motion in the piece from the cadence to your language going back and forth from movement (flight, the breeze, her or his breath) to stillness (N lying on grass, still trees, life suspended).

Like Chershire cat I think that most people can relate to this feeling at some point in their lives.

Hi cate

You mention a love that is freeing, Is there such a thing? I have always found all love to be confining and restrictive and yes sometimes smothering.
The freedom is in passion and want! (wrong as that might seem).

And yes life is suspended. but really isn't that what life is about It just hangs there to see if you have the guts to live it....

Most people crave the concept of freedom in one form or another the trouble is when they achieve it is usually not all they thought it would be !
There is nothing wrong with being selfish from time to time but by definition it can only be done in the context of being with other people which therefore makes the quest for freedom meaningless because there would no need to be selfish . Everybody needs someone at some point in their lives . No man ( or women ) is an island !

Hi YL

I agree that every body needs someone at some point in there lives but why do we feel the need to possess someone. why can't we just be satisfied with being with someone, enjoying that moment not trying to own it or justify it. Just live it...

Maybe thats just how i feel... I read a quote from a country and western song in another thread 'Freeedom is another word for nothing left to lose'.
Maybe I have nothing left to lose...
