On the Australian it says Renee Fleming, of Met Opera fame, has recorded it.

This version sounds very promising!
And, as most of you have probably read on Marie’s post for Today’s Cohen, it will again be featured in the finals for American Idol this week.
Moratorium? It don’t look like it yet

Yes, I saw that on FB, Dick. Really beautiful, what I saw, and as commented in the video, there really is much kindness in her voice. Perfect for a song by Leonard.
I'm afraid Leonard may just have to accept that he wrote a classic, as they speak for themselves. At some point, he may sit back and enjoy that he came to fully realize that fact while he's still alive... a pleasure denied so many writers, songwriters, and artists.
What a dilemma, eh?

Thanks Dick for the info,
This is a quote from the text in the Australian -
"We worried about including Hallelujah," said Mensch, "because it's been covered by everyone. But no one has sung it like she does: and when you hear the words,
you realise it's a song about a sex fiend! Maybe that's why they don't want to let her sing it at the Last Night of the Proms this year, as a lead-in to Rule Britannia."
Everyone has varying opinions about this song

Renee's cd is titled "Dark Hope" -- and it will be released on June 8. Put in my Amazon order yesterday.
Has anyone noted it can be expensive being Cohenphilic?

I was at the Natalie Merchant concert in Cologne this week where she presented her new album (Leave your sleep- it's great and highy recommended). In the encore part she asked for wishes from the audience and some guy called out for Hallelujah- and she did it spontaneously , it was great!!!

If THIS song is about a sex fiend, then King Solomon was a sex fiend also. As in THE BIBLE. I can't believe Mensch said that
......that song is so much deeper than that.......

It has yet to be broadcast on the west coast, but it is already on Youtube and here is DeWyze singing a 2 minute version.

Rumor Control: Simon Cowell 'loves,' but does not own the rights to, Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah'
by Michael Slezak
In the wake of Lee DeWyze’s much-buzzed-about rendition of “Hallelujah” on American Idol this week, internet chatter turned to the fact that Alexandra Burke, season 5 winner of Britain’s The X Factor, also performed the Leonard Cohen composition during her championship run on the latter show. Message-board conspiracy theorists and several gossip sites picked up on the connection and claimed that Idol judge Simon Cowell (who also produces and serves as a panelist on X Factor, which he’ll bring to U.S. audiences in fall 2011) chose “Hallelujah” for DeWyze because he’d purchased the rights to the song several years ago and stood to personally profit from the performance.
I went straight to the source for answers, and it turns out the story was pure rumor. Cowell “loves the song” but “he does not own the rights” to it, his publicist explains.
Turns out they actually belong to Sony/ATV Music Publishing. A rep for the company says that Cowell could potentially make money off the recording of “Hallelujah” if it was done by an artist on his label (i.e. Leona Lewis or Susan Boyle), but that Sony/ATV owns the publishing rights.
And thus concludes another edition of “Don’t Believe Everything You Read on the Internet.” –additional reporting by Whitney Pastorek

Thanks for posting this, Arlene. Yesterday, my supervisor mentioned to me having seen this and commented on how it really is such a beautiful song [

], but I had no idea what she was referring to, so now I know the cover of it that she saw.
This is as good a place as any, I'm guessing, for this question. Since we're talking about Leonard's Hallelujah here, I'll apply it to that particular song.
In another thread and discussion involving Anthem, I made a comment on how Leonard himself changes his lyrics regularly [in general], but that they're his lyrics to do with as he will ~ and he does. As I was riding in the car today, however, a thought that's never occurred to me before [at least not that I recall

]. Maybe it's been covered somewhere here before, way back when, but the question struck me as to whether ~ since Sony owns the rights to Hallelujah and so many other songs ~ when Leonard sings and earns money from them in his concerts, is he required to pay royalties on his own songs to Sony?
Thanks to anyone who can answer. If I never knew it, I've sure forgotten the answer. When the whole snafu came to light, it wasn't something that necessarily would've occurred to me, since Leonard wasn't performing.

I don't know the answer to your question Lizzy but this article in the AmericanSongwriter.com seems to relate to this thread so I thought I would post it here. And I also get to post Lorca's wonderful picture of her father.
The guy's punchline is wrong about Leonard getting rich from all the covers of "Hallelujah" - but someone left a comment to correct him.

Comment Of The Week: American Idol’s Leonard Cohen Fixation
By americansongwriter on May 21st, 2010

(Photo: Lorca Cohen)
American Songwriter reader Michael C. comments on Lee DeWzye’s performance of “Hallelujah,” which marked the umpteenth time that song has appeared on American Idol:
“First thing is first – The song is a perfect song, it’s that simple. Lee DeWyze did a great job with it, he has that sort of singer/songwriter raspy voice that is needed in my opinion.
Those of us who love and support the true singer/songwriters of today’s world (and yesterdays world for that matter) seem to find frustration when the “mainstream” so selfishly gets to decide when they will or won’t support those kinds of artists.
I read what Leonard Cohen had to say about it being over played and that is probably true. But listen, about 30 million young people who like pretty much what MTV and today’s radio decides they should like at least have been given the chance to discover the genesis of that song and Leonard Cohen. Perhaps that will lead to a Josh Ritter discovery or Joe Pug, maybe John Hiatt, Justin Townes Earle, Ryan Adams, Thad Cockrell, John Prine, or heaven forbid Bob Dylan or Townes Van Zandt.
So, even though I struggle with American Idol, MTV, mainstream radio, and that whole false idea on what music is – Every so often, something great comes of it, regardless of how Cohen feels about the saturation of that song. DeWyze did it justice and it will be nice to see if he knows anything about songwriting in the future. As for Leonard Cohen, I would imagine the money that has been rolling in since the first contestant on American Idol performed it has served as a pretty decent shoulder to cry on.”

* Sue said:
I believe that Leonard Cohen lost any rights to the song “Hallelujah” when his manager, without his knowledge, sold the rights. She also stole most of his money. So – I agree with most of what you say, but not your wrap-up. Leonard Cohen is not making a fortune from people covering his amazing song “Hallelujah” as Simon Cowell is quoted as once saying. If Leonard Cohen sings the song himself he would make money that way – but not when other people cover sing it.

Thanks, Linda. As you know, even though it comes close, it still doesn't take it that one step further, to clarify whether even though Leonard may make money by singing it at concerts [through the earnings that come as a function of the concert proceeds], does he also end up losing a portion of that same money through royalties paid out to Sony after the performances? Lorca has taken some wonderful photos of her Dad, hasn't she? Just something about the communication between the subject and the camera [shall we say the eyes behind it]

.
Thanks for posting the article. Ha! Simon owning the rights... Sony might've been stupid, years ago, regarding this song, but they're sure not now.

I'm divided on this whole "Should other people sing this song" thing. On the one hand, NOBODY will ever sing it like Cohen, but on the other hand GOD BLESS these younger people for discovering LC and WANTING to sing it! I "introduced" LC to two 20-somethings here at work and they are HUGE fans now. I agree, it may, at the moment, be oversung lately, but that may pass........then we'll all be WISHING somebody would sing it. Also, these two co-workers I speak of, while they like the other artists who have sung the song, STILL defend Mr. Cohen as the Master of the tune, so to speak,.....so they're learning proper "Cohen-ism". (Gotta bring 'em up right!)

What a great anecdote, RAIN

! I WISH that were happening with me here! You're absolutely right on "GOD BLESS these younger people for discovering LC and WANTING to sing it!" It's so quite out of sync with the popular music today. To think that these young, cool people are embracing it is for me testimony of Leonard's timelessness. And to have them DEFENDING his original version... ahhhhh, bliss! How satisfying to hear that!
I'm happy to hear other people singing it for the reasons you've given and I'm always interested to see what they will or won't do with it. I know artists are concerned with something of theirs flooding the market, and then people lose interest due to saturation. It may end up getting a break of some sort, but it will ALWAYS be here! It's just too much of a classic not to be.

Renee Fleming sang Hallelujah on the Andrew Marr show (UK Sunday morning politics & current events programme) this morning. I braced myself - but I was actually quite impressed - a sensitive and understated version.
