I found this in the weekend section of the Seattle Times in the 'Parade' magazine dated March 21 2010.
Its from an interview with K.D. Lang

Question:
"I was blown away by K.D. Lang's rendition of Hallelujah at the Winter Olympics opening ceremony.
What is the meaning of the song?"
"Hallelujah was written by the iconoclastic Leonard Cohen, whose lyrics are often mysterious."
"To me, the song is a study of the condition of desire, Lang tells us. "I think the organizers wanted to have a spiritual
acknowledgment, to hope that the Games would be peaceful."
