I have a question which has niggled me for some time now, in the Stina interview with LC he mentions cooking a meal for Roshi which is chicken soup. Now I may be wrong but aren't Buddists vegetarians. Can someone put me right on this one, it's silly I know but it's been bugging me.

Hi~
I think it would be more or less correct to say that most monks and nuns in the buddhist tradition are vegetarian, if not lay-people. In Teravada Buddhism, all buddhists are. In Mahayana Buddhism, it's not always so.. The Japanese Soto Zen tradition does not demand vegetarianism, but leaves it up to the individual. To my knowledge, Cohen belongs to Rinzai Zen, and I would imagine they have a similar take on it.

From interviews I have heard or read I think Leonard was for a time vegetarian, but like other phases and interests he explored, it didn't last!

I recall reading somewhere about some people [interviewers? photographers? can't recall] visiting his house, and his serving them meat in some form [sausages? sandwiches with meat? can't recall] ~ of course, what he serves others doesn't necessarily mean he eats it himself. He could just have it on hand for being gracious to those who do. However, I got the sense that this wasn't the case. It sounds like he's no longer a vegetarian.

Thanks for the replies, I can sleep now

I know he was a veggie for some time but like Margaret said I think it was probably short lived. I went off meat for about a year the foot and mouth fiasco finaly turned me off, although I'm going off it again, scrambled eggs and asparagus is on the menu today.
