Thanks Sturgess for posting that up, would have missed it otherwise. What I really liked about that film is LC at some parts is just talking, if that makes sense. Usually in interviews he is getting across some deep point or something but it was just different to hear him telling his daughter that the dog at the vets was ok or whatever...he also says 'eh' (its something I strongly associate with Canada).

I love when Leonard and Roshi are walking up the street, and Leonard buys ice-cream from an ice-cream truck. I wonder if the driver of the ice-cream truck had any idea who he was selling ice-cream to? Can you imagine working in an ice-cream truck and having Leonard Cohen come over to buy some? I would die!

Thank you so much for posting this, Linda. It's a wonderful film: just such intimate, quiet, and patient talking and listening.
One of the many things I found interesting was watching it in 2010: one gets the sense that back in 1996 Leonard saw the performing part of his life as being over: he talks about not being cut out for it. I could imagine watching this film in 2007 with a very different feeling than one does now, after all the incredible concerts that he's given.
Thanks again.
Sue

Linda - thank you!
This is incredible, so revealing in many ways

. Love the little moments, ie. in part 3 where he's got his headphones on and he's listening to himself and he's saying 'this is good...it's good to have your voice amplified....yeah, it's good...thank you very much..'

. So often he can be self-depricating. It's great to see that he was enjoying his voice as we do all the time.
Couldn't help but think as I was watching this - all the stories his fellow monks could tell. To have been there at the same time. I would have had no problem being silent with him.
Kindest regards,
Mary

Thanks to TheDANA48 for posting on you tube and to Linda for bringing this long sort after film to my attention again.
I have over the years seen bits and pieces of this but not all of it in continuity (always meaning to get it). I love the casual feel of the whole film.
I especially love the bit near the end when Leonard is sitting in the car, singing his song to the radio.
Reverse osmosis.

I do that everyday singing to one of his tunes.
as an aside: the layback attitude of this film remindes me of another interview called "Picnic In The Park" with a fellow Canadian writer. It also succeeds in the same way and also because the interviewer is totally absent from the whole procedure.

Yeah, that bit struck me too! I do that every day too! And thats a great song too, Never any good, haven't listened to it before. He writes in so many genres, and always seems to hit the nail on the head. Hard work I guess. But I also loved the Thousand Kisses deep version he had. Yeah, I think the Sharon Robinson one is pretty cool but that one has a charm as well.

Thanks sturgess66 for posting these. I felt a bit voyeuristic watching them, but watch them I did. Leonard seemed at times to be a man at odds with himself in this documentary. He apparently needed the camaraderie and discipline offered at Mt Baldy that he mentions here. And obviously he benefitted from his stay there. I am also a bit curious as to why he was listening to Rush Limbaugh

Really good! I loved watching him help Roshi get settled in his room

.........I've never been very clear on whether or not Never Any Good was an outtake from The Future (my original assumption), but having watched this I'm wondering if it was recorded while on Mt. Baldy? (the early Thousand Kisses is pretty fun to hear, too)

The verse of Thousand Kisses Deep that Leonard sings here is essentially the same as the "new" verse he recited during the Madison Square Garden concert in October. I really enjoyed hearing it in this context, and hearing it sung was interesting too. In an interview on NPR's FreshAir in 2006 he talked about how there were some verses that were to be sung, and others that were to be recited, and in the printed version in The Book of Longing, the recited version comes first as "1" and the sung version as "2". I guess he was still figuring that out here, as well as the melody itself.

yep. i'm pretty sure he recited the same version at all the concerts; changing up the final stanzas sometime this past year. I hadn't heard him sing the "recited" verses, so that was cool. I definitely think that, by and large, he had the right instinct and left the proper verses to their respective arenas. Both versions (TNS and Live versions) are exquisite.
