The Chipmunks were a "special effects" group of voices recorded at a 'slow speed' and monitored and re-recorded at a fast speed. The real name of the inventor was Ross Bagdasarian and Ross, Jr. continues his late father's work today. He recorded under the name David Seville and the Chipmunks. Simon and Theodore were back-up and co-singers with Alvin. (3 different 'voices' at different registers)
It's interesting that all the opposites are falsetto voices.
