The Difference

Observations on Leonard Cohen, Chicago, May 6, 2009
They said you ran
Off the stage and on.
But I saw it for myself.
It was a skip
Of joy,
That swept cool breezes across my skin,
And curled my heart in a smile.
That difference is more than words.
It’s the difference between
Mud and sand, lead and feather,
Ground and sky, hard landing and takeoff.
It is the difference
I came looking for.
My smile sails me home, trailing the difference
Along the midnight street.
Will they think I’m crazy for skipping home?
Or will they join me,
Their hearts taking on the smile?
They said you ran
Off the stage and on.
But I saw it for myself.
It was a skip
Of joy,
That swept cool breezes across my skin,
And curled my heart in a smile.
That difference is more than words.
It’s the difference between
Mud and sand, lead and feather,
Ground and sky, hard landing and takeoff.
It is the difference
I came looking for.
My smile sails me home, trailing the difference
Along the midnight street.
Will they think I’m crazy for skipping home?
Or will they join me,
Their hearts taking on the smile?
