suddenly
shape comes from darkness
grey lines merging
beyond the point of visibility

lanterns glance and stare
along crushed decks
bend and twist
between torn timbers
into dissolved superstructure

we glide a length of starboard gunwale
slide along partioned darkness
entering carefully
where ghosts whisper

down through awkward angles
into deep caverns
where a ling cod snakes
through twisted moments
a slim shape slipping
into shadow

clinging to whispers and shallows
we move on

listening for laughter and the clink of glass
hearing that last call to duty
listing decks slipping
into the ice cold deep

Brings to mind one of my favorite Lightfoot tunes: The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald.
