Miquel Gil & Manel Camp Trio - Tower of Song / La torre dels sons - Miquel Gil & Manel Camp amb David Pastor Trio - Catalonia 2009 - Catalan
A very good adaptation of Tower of Song. We enjoyed the concert on Friday 2th at the Auditori Barradas de L'Hospitalet, Barcelona.

It was the presentation of their album "Miquel Gil & amb Manel Camp David Pastor Trio".
with covers of Yupanqui, Joan Manuel Serrat, Paulo Conte, Sting, Piazzolla... a perfect selection for my pleasure.
If the band in concert sounds great, the sound of the album is even better. We saw to Manel Camp this summer with Maria del Mar Bonet, this collaboration comes from afar. He has the musical level of Javier Mas. Miquel Gil founded the legendary Valencian band Al Tall, also linked with Maria del Mar Bonet. Horacio Fumero was part of the Tete Montoliu trio.
This "Torre dels sons" is a superb version, with the Miquel Gil deep voice and the exquisite jazz blues music. They began the concert with it and closed the encores, a gift.
I am very interested in covers, especially if they surprise and make me discover new ways in which I had not thought. This is a great case to study.
I think it's very literal, understanding that is not a translation, is a song. I just found three significant changes: the first is the title, I understand the purpose and it's good. Then Hank Williams becomes Gato Pérez, he was an intellectual of the Catalan rumba. Forcing the machine he broke his heart. It seems very appropriate to adapt the characters to the local culture. Gato must be in the Tower and I don't forget him.
What perplexed to me is the translation of "I ache in the places where I used to play", Alberto Manzano says "Me duelen las partes con las que antes jugaba", "to play" have the meaning of game, entertain or amusing, and I never doubted. It sounded perfect, a great line and very funny, but somewhat disturbing for my future. Ouch! In this cover it's changed for: "enyorant l'aroma d'escenaris plens", something as "longing for the aroma of filled stages". Now "to play" is to performer, to interpreter, to sing in a concert. It's very free but I accept it as possible... and surprising. Maybe Cohen opened double meaning.
And it makes more sense when Miquel Gil finished the song, said that Cohen wrote for the music people. Then it's an inbred song. Well I guessed a little longer, but I gave it a much wider universe.
Yes, I see the old musician closed in the Tower of Songs recalling the past.
