DONOVAN: MY SIX BEST ALBUMS

Friday October 9,2009

DONOVAN, 63, is a Scottish singer-songwriter. He shot to fame in the Sixties, notching up a whole string of hit singles and albums including Sunshine Superman and the Season Of The Witch. He was made a musical icon at the BMI awards in London this week
--------
...Leonard Cohen: Songs of Leonard Cohen

(Columbia)

As soon as Leonard Cohen appeared on the scene in the Sixties it was clear that he was something very special – an artist for the ages. A big favourite of mine, this includes some of his best-known songs such as Suzanne and So Long, Marianne...

I think his choice of Bert Jansch is especially significant because like Leonard his work is continually praised by fellow professional artists which is no mean feat . Great choice Donovan !

I recall a documentary on Donovan in which he spoke about his early years in the recording business.
When Donovan was going through a difficult patch of contractual wranglings in the late 60s he took off to a Greek island (with Gypsy Dave). He took with him a record player and only three records - 'The Songs of LC' being one of them.

...he had a good size boat called the Vagrant...I believe Paros was a favorite spot on land....and is said to be where he wrote "There is A Mountain" and "Writer in the Sun".....

Cohen > Donovan. Speaking in artistic terms.
