Currently in its 21st season, Malashock Dance is an integral part of San Diego's vibrant arts community - providing performances, educational programs, outreach projects and classes to thousands of people each year. Founded by John Malashock in 1988, following his extensive career in dance and theater, Malashock Dance performs in various San Diego venues and events and has toured nationally and internationally.

Complementing Malashock Dance's full performance schedule are the activities of The Malashock Dance School: a full range of classes for children, adults, pre-professional and professional dancers; and education and outreach activities throughout San Diego.

Malashock Dance has also taken a leadership role in the creation of Dance Place San Diego housed in a spectacular historic building at the NTC Promenade in Point Loma's Liberty Station.

Malashock Dance Brings Its Exciting Choreography To A&I April 1

Dynamic, emotionally charged choreography executed by magnificently trained dancers is the signature of the Malashock Dance Co., coming to the Arts & Issues stage at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 1, on the main stage in Katherine Dunham Hall on the campus of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

Edwardsville, Ill (Vocus/PRWEB ) March 16, 2010 -- Dynamic, emotionally charged choreography executed by magnificently trained dancers is the signature of the Malashock Dance Co., coming to the Arts & Issues stage at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 1, on the main stage in Katherine Dunham Hall on the campus of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

A few of the highlights will include excerpts from artistic director John Malashock’s critically-acclaimed work, Shadow of Mercy, the male duet from Malashock’s After Dust, as well Mizerany’s Wayward Glances, an audience favorite.

The troupe’s repertoire includes original works that have mesmerized audiences and epic works that have interpreted human struggles, with charming and intimate, often playful, pieces that convey the intricacies of relationships. Michael Mizerany, a product of the SIUE Department of Theater and Dance, is the group’s associate artistic director.

Arts & Issues series Director Grant Andree says he is looking forward to welcoming the dance troupe as well as Mizerany, who has returned to SIUE on several occasions to speak to dance students and teach master classes. “It will be great to welcome back Michael to his alma mater but also we’ll be showcasing the excitement that is Malashock,” Andree said.

“Over the years, Arts & Issues has featured several dance companies but this one will have an added dimension. With Mike’s presence,” Andree pointed out, “considering his contributions to the group, the spotlight also will shine on SIUE’s excellent dance program.”

The concert will offer works that are both physically challenging and emotionally exhilarating. A few of the highlights will include excerpts from artistic director John Malashock’s critically-acclaimed work, Shadow of Mercy, the male duet from Malashock’s After Dust, as well Mizerany’s Wayward Glances, an audience favorite.

Shadow of Mercy is Malashock’s critically-acclaimed production set to the lyrical masterpieces of internationally-renowned songwriter Leonard Cohen. This poetic and powerful performance blends the dark and humorous lyrics of Cohen with the provocative and deeply human choreography of the Emmy winner Malashock. This work showcases powerful movement, exquisite partnering and dramatic artistry that are his signature elements.

Malashock, who founded his dance company in 1988, brings 35 years experience in the fields of dance and theater including a distinguished performance career with Twyla Tharp Dance Co. As artistic director for Malashock, he has created nearly 60 choreographic works. In addition to Tharp, Malashock’s performance career includes work with the Utah Repertory Dance Theatre and distinguished choreographers such as Lar Lubovitch, Anna Sokolow, Donald McKayle and Jennifer Muller.

With Tharp he appeared in pieces worldwide, was featured in numerous television specials (Dance in America, The Catherine Wheel, Twyla Tharp Scrapbook), appeared in the Academy Award-winning film Amadeus and performed in benefit concerts with Baryshnikov and Cynthia Gregory.
