Sestina for Fear
Eyes wide open, yet bathed in darkness.
Eyes tight shut, yet all is bleak.
Snug in bed, yet still having chills.
All that was comfort, is now unknown.
heart racing, spine feels icy fingers.
A knock at the door; it is despair.
A knock at the door; enter despair.
Behind it and all around, darkness.
It must not touch with its icy fingers,
Lest night be never-ending and bleak.
Does despair also fear the unknown?
The thought brings chills.
Grasping hands instill paralyzing chills.
A goose crosses the grave of despair,
Sending a shockwave through the unknown,
Leaving heart quivering in darkness
All feels bleak,
And in the tight grip of icy fingers.
A strange warmth accompanies icy fingers
A rosy glow follows chills
A blank slate is not so bleak
Fear is not only despair,
Though it walks cloaked in darkness,
And dwells safe in the unknown.
Safe and snug in the unknown
No sensation can warm icy fingers
No comfort hides in the darkness
No arms to drive away the chills
Fear is the manse of despair,
And its grounds are bleak.
Wander bare-footed through grounds that are bleak,
And embrace the resounding unknown.
You are welcomed by despair
Who caresses you with icy fingers.
In its arms, you no longer feel chills
Eyes wide open, you’re reborn in darkness
No longer bleak, swaddled in darkness.
The unknown brings thrills not chills.
And your lover, despair, teases with icy fingers.
Eyes wide open, yet bathed in darkness.
Eyes tight shut, yet all is bleak.
Snug in bed, yet still having chills.
All that was comfort, is now unknown.
heart racing, spine feels icy fingers.
