I went shopping this morning and called in to one of our local bargain shops and came across a copy of Macabe & Mrs Miller, I couldn't believe my eyes, naturally I bought a copy. What disappointed me though was the quality of the film, now I know why the copies that have been circulating have not been that good. Still it's nice to have an original of something that Cohen is associated with.

Did you like the film. I found it really dreary. I love the soundtrack though

I must admit I thought it a little dreary too, I started to get into it at one point then I drifted again! But like you said the soundtrack is good.

But is it worth watching a film just for the soundtrack, when the songs are all available elsewhere?

I actually enjoy off-beat melancholy films now and then.
Some of my family and friends think I have very wierd tastes in all sorts of things

It may drag a little but it shows a genuine attempt as portraying the wild west as it really was, not as Holywood glamorises it. Set in a prospect village, with the hope of men making their riches from gold, it attracts the lowlife and the prostitutes, who also want to make money. The soundtrack is of course beautiful and compliments the film. Well worth a watch and a must for any cohen fan..........

Talking of off beat movies has anyone seen the French film The delicatessent, it was called The butcher in english. Absolutely wild humour, right up my street

And Linda I confess I only bought Macabe & Mrs Miller because of the Cohen connection also it was at a knock down price!

I bought the film on DVD a few days ago and watched it again. It is quite a depressing film with McCabe almost making it against the baddies. I did not like the mumbling of Julie Christie, it was very difficult to hear her dialogue. The soundtrack however was the highlight of the film and complimented the story and the bleak struggle of humanity and the huers to make a living at what was a very lawless time. Any Cohen fan should have a copy.

I don't know if anyone is interested but my local "Peacocks" is selling McCabe and Mrs Millar on video for £3.99. If anyone wants me to get them one let me know. This offer only applies to PAL videos

Yeah, 'Delicatessen' is a great one! I love the cello+saw duets
I'd really like to see McCabe, I'm a friend of Altman's movies, especially 'Short Cuts'.

Hi cicatriz
I just loved that film, I was amazed at the various ways that poor woman tried to kill herself. I once had a conversation to a friend about the film and I couldn't remember if there was really an explanation for the shortage of meat and he replied "Did it really matter"
This afternoon I watched a film that I had wanted to see for some time, I finally got around to it, called "It's a beautiful life" again a foreign film with sub titles I enjoyed it. Anyone else see that?

Hi Wendy ~
When titles start coming in so close to each other, they start getting rearranged in my head, too.
I saw Life Is Beautiful, about the Nazi camps and a father's reframing of all the issues, to protect his young son from the trauma of it all. Sub-titled. I loved it.
I've also seen It's A Wonderful Life, a classic here [a Christmas favourite].

Life is Beautiful was one of the best movies I've ever seen. I have to tell you sub-titles really made the movie for me. Same with Amelie..I love that movie too..digression..
