Janis Joplin

Is anyone going to the Janis Joplin Tribute/Celebration today? It's in honour of what would have been her 60th birthday. I don't know the time, but it's being held in Central Park/Summer Stage. Both of her bands will be there......Big Brother and the Holding Company, and the Cosmic Blues Band [hope that last one is exactly right]. Those singing her songs will not be trying to emulate her [as "there is only one Janis," or a similar quote], but will be bringing their own style to the songs.
I listened to an interview with the man who went with her when she changed from the first band, Big Brother, to the other. He chronicled her entrance into his life from day one and believes she would still be alive today, if she hadn't left the original band ~ this due to her tremendous respect for one of the members [the leader?] who didn't do drugs, so she and the rest curtailed their usage when he was around. It was a great interview and can be found on NPR, though I don't know exactly where. It was so great to hear excerpts from her songs and his describing [amongst many other things] how Summertime has a "riff" [for lack of the proper word
] from Bach.
If I lived in New York [so many things arise that cause me to wish I did], I'd be going to Central Park. I, of course, thought of her
and Leonard
at the Chelsea Hotel.
