The following snippet appeared in The Times newspaper today 2 July 2008

He may have lost millions to a shady manager, but supposedly gloomy singer Leonard Cohenstill had time
to make a buskers day en route to his gig at the Glastonbury festival.The guitarist John Towell received
a pound from the singer on the streets of Bath. A quid? That's what we thought.

For our Non UK friends a quid is equal to £1.00 and is approx $2.00 or €1.25

Unless the UK pound has recently lost even more exchange value against the Euro than I'd imagined then I think your €0.80 approximation expresses the current inverse relationship of the two currencies, Ray.

A quid is nearer €1.25.

I would estimate that most passersby give buskers between zero and some loose small change, so the quid sounds a well above the average going rate payment.

Im sure if John was rubbish he would have got nothing. Well done John... A nod of approval from leonard would have been enough for me

Leonard Cohen, that's who and, what's more, he even puts a quid in the guitar case. Then you wake up, or not in the case of one Justin Towell, 26, who had the experience while playing there last week. "He looked at me and I was beaming back. I said: 'Thank you very much, sir', and he smiled at me and continued on his way," said Towell, who otherwise made a total of £8 all afternoon. Perhaps Cohen was trying to tell him something about his playing.

There once was a busker in Bath
strumming his guitar on the path
he sang for a penny

"you must be having a laugh"

So this busker busking in Bath
he calculated a bit of math(s)
he sang a hundred times
not missing any rhymes
and Lenny he laughed and he laughed

So Lenny did his own bit of math(s)
and gave him the pound he did hath
but the busker played on
and on and on and on
and Lenny no longer did laugh

"You've had the pound I did hath
and now you're blocking my path
I need to get round
so give back my pound
you're not the only busker in Bath"
