Ode To A Cruel Critic
You hide your heart
Of gold so well
Beneath your armor
And your heavy shell
Your hidden habit
Hard to see
For others
And for me
I know it's there
The habit and the heart
As sure as there's a horse
That pulls the cart
You teach us how to be
With one another
The open-hearted kindness
Of a mother
You teach us how to cry
When a weaker one is hurt,
When his too-thin skin is lifted
By a scalpel of sharp words
Humble hurt and naked
He's left standing in the wind
A break of people gathered 'round
Standing up for him
Like the monk who left his cave
Meeting with the dog
Crying as the maggots
Took advantage of his luck
We need to help the fallen
And the feller too
When the table turns
We will do the same for you
Sean
