Life in the Moment
If I could change places with my dog
I wouldn't have to worry about:
my son in college,
the war,
the mortgage crisis,
saying the wrong thing,
what to wear,
or wonder
whether or not
I was happy.
Whenever I heard you approach
I'd rush to greet you
wagging my tail
I show you my underbite.
Then I'd give you kisses.
I would make you believe
that you are the
most important person in the world
and that I have spent all of my life
waiting for you to show up.
.
Most likely you'd pat me on the head
tell me how cute I am
and respond to my advances with
"I love you too."
and maybe you would kiss me back.
And if by chance you spurned me
by turning your back
or saying "How gross"
or kicking me in the face,
I would be stunned for a moment
and then look for
the next person to greet
and wag my tail
and give him kisses.
