at long last a topic that has actually some connection to our welsh weekend……
......went to leeds in yorkshire last weekend to see a production of ‘this land:the woody guthrie story’ which was basically a step by step telling of the life story of woody guthrie from cradle to grave.… it explored the highs and the lows of woody's career using woody’s music and writings…..the format was short dramatic scenes wrapped around a large selection of woody’s folk and protest songs linked by short narrative pieces and served up with lashings of poetic prose by the man himself.......
.....the singing throughout the show was more than excellent....particularly from katie matthews…the only female actor….who had the difficult task of portraying every female character young and old in guthrie’s life ….throughout the show six of the seven male actors got a chance to portray woody at various stages of his life…following along the same idea as the todd hayes dylan bio film i’m not there when he had 7 or 8 actors portray bob dylan…......
......personal highlights for me were katie mathews singing woody’s hobo’s lullaby and the final scene an empty stage except for a bed with a dying woody writhing uncontrollably with his huntingtons and a young bob dylan at the bed side….i’ve seen countless dylan wannabees over the years but the young singer/actor playing dylan here was absolutely the best ever……and as he sang his song to woody (the only non guthrie song in the whole show) over the dying woody of course the tears just flowed out from this silly old bugger……….brilliant show….if it ever comes your way please don’t miss it……
…..strange but true…I saw a poster while I was in leeds advertising an upcoming arlo guthrie concert in the tiny yorkshire village of holmfirth (last of the summer wine) pity arlo isn’t going to be around for this show…..
.....ahhh i almost forgot the barmouth connection….when the cast sang woody’s talking dust bowl blues I was immediately taken back to our very own mighty joe way cutting through all the cohen and elvis malarkey and singing his wonderful version of this song for us in barmouth…..happy days indeed….ta ken

Thankyou so much Bernadine and Diane for your birthday greetings . Nothing special planned . Thats for next year the big 60 . We are just going to our favourite pub tonight for a quiet meal . We are both having all day breakfast . I know this because you have to book the night before and then you cannot change your mind or you have to suffer the embarrassment of leaving before you have eaten .

phil
happy birthday friend
....you have unfortunately come to that stage in life that when your birthday comes around everybody annoyingly tries to jolly you along by telling you ‘don’t worry it’s only a number’….i won’t fall into that group of folk but instead I give you a few things you and jean may want to discuss over your birthday meal this evening…….
....(with apologies to mr needham)...........
59 is the 17th smallest prime number.
the next is 61 with which it comprises a twin prime.
59 is an irregular prime, a safe prime and the 14th supersingular prime.
59 is an eisenstein prime with no imaginary part and real part of the form 3n − 1. since 15! + 1 is divisible by 59 but 59 is not one more than a multiple of 15, 59 is a pillai prime
it is also a highly cototient number.
there are 59 stellations of the icosahedron
59 is one of the factors that divides the smallest composite Euclid number.
in this case 59 divides the euclid number 13# + 1 = 2 * 3 * 5 * 7 * 11 * 13 + 1 = 59 * 509
