such a child
Yes Fisher,
But he's a brave little lad
(perhaps a little foolish and outspoken)
To be playing
With the likes of us
After what the likes of them
Did to the likes of us

Do you think perhaps he might be making an oh so quiet, subtle and tentative and indirect and ultimately ineffective apology on behalf of his ancestors?

someone posted a part of this poem by bobby sands recently . heres it all . i believe damien dempsy recorded it but i have yet to hear it.

The Rhythm Of Time

There's an inner thing in every man,
Do you know this thing my friend?
It has withstood the blows of a million years,
And will do so to the end.

It was born when time did not exist,
And it grew up out of life,
It cut down evil's strangling vines,
Like a slashing searing knife.

It lit fires when fires were not,
And burnt the mind of man,
Tempering leandened hearts to steel,
From the time that time began.

It wept by the waters of Babylon,
And when all men were a loss,
It screeched in writhing agony,
And it hung bleeding from the Cross.

It died in Rome by lion and sword,
And in defiant cruel array,
When the deathly word was 'Spartacus'
Along with Appian Way.

It marched with Wat the Tyler's poor,
And frightened lord and king,
And it was emblazoned in their deathly stare,
As e'er a living thing.

It smiled in holy innocence,
Before conquistadors of old,
So meek and tame and unaware,
Of the deathly power of gold.

It burst forth through pitiful Paris streets,
And stormed the old Bastille,
And marched upon the serpent's head,
And crushed it 'neath its heel.

It died in blood on Buffalo Plains,
And starved by moons of rain,
Its heart was buried in Wounded Knee,
But it will come to rise again.

It screamed aloud by Kerry lakes,
As it was knelt upon the ground,
And it died in great defiance,
As they coldly shot it down.

It is found in every light of hope,
It knows no bounds nor space
It has risen in red and black and white,
It is there in every race.

It lies in the hearts of heroes dead,
It screams in tyrants' eyes,
It has reached the peak of mountains high,
It comes searing 'cross the skies.

It lights the dark of this prison cell,
It thunders forth its might,
It is 'the undauntable thought', my friend,
That thought that says 'I'm right!'

The cross that you carry, is alien to me.
I see its reflection
in the faces of wrinkled old women,
and mass going children
in pretty frocks....
Take your cross,
your guilt,
and place it in the temple you have built in your heart,
from the bricks and mortar,
of our ruined love.

I like this much more, guess im just in a wonderful place right now :)

The wars they will be fought again
The holy dove, be caught again
And bought and sold, and caught again
The dove is never free ...... Leonard

I like this not because it is nice but because it is the truth of our 'samsara'
Samsara can't be 'fixed'
It is the truth of our communal existence on this suffering planet
We are driven by delusions
Enlightenment is simply completely getting over our delusions

I once had a Psychotherapist/friend who said that:

Love without truth is useless
Truth without love is cruel

When it comes to Bobby Sands nobody told his story better than the mighty Christy Moore

Daka -
you write:

"Yes Fisher,
But he's a brave little lad
(perhaps a little foolish and outspoken)
To be playing
With the likes of us
After what the likes of them
Did to the likes of us."

Some questions -
How does this sit with your avowed religious beliefs?
Who are "them" and who are "us"?
How does your opinion sit with the murders of the two British soldiers stripped and left naked on a Good Friday afternoon - just another atrocity in a series of atrocities committed on ALL sides against ALL sides?
What exactly do you know about Irish history, beyond reciting verses and singing songs?

MFL - your point is?

fisher
- actually (and this is NOT a political point) Bobby Sands verse is poor, it's closer to doggerel than poetry and if it had been written by someone who had not died on hunger strike it would never have seen the light of day.

"It is 'the undauntable thought', my friend,
That thought that says 'I'm right!''
Those lines, for instance, are bereft of any of the irony which Dylan put into "God on our side."
If you want to look for worthwhile Irish republican poets look to MacDonagh and Pearse, their writing was of a vastly superior calibre.

As for the singing of Kevin Barry in Dublin, I can assure you fisher, it will not be sung on stage and that comes from close to the horse's mouth.
I look forward to meeting you in Dublin.

God bless,
William

well willie boy thats your opinion on bobbys verse no one and certainly not bobby himself would profess to being a great poet but that is only one of his writings . you should take the time to read one day in my life , i read it willie boy and thats what i know about irish history , the history of the time when it was written. you mentioned two british soliders murdered , pearse and mcdonagh advocated the death of soldiers . we can all be picky and choosey about what was the worse of the deaths in this conflict i can think of nothing worse than allowing a nation to starve to death as your nation did in the 1840,s. as for looking forward to seeing me in dublin , don,t so my friend . your remark regarding the no wash protest is deserving of a smack in the mouth. so if your in dublin just behave .
