I have no idea on the cup and it is driving me crazy. It does not sound like hammered, abba, habba, or manna or anything else that has been suggested. It sounds exactly like habbered. I think Leonard sees this thread and is actually messing with us.
lol--- agree. Someone is laughing at us.

I, too, hear "habbered" or "happerd". :?: :?

I have to say I really love this song. I also have to remark how generous Leonard is. How many artists would do a world premiere of a song and give most of the verses to others?

On pg3 - mwaldman's post on the toy manufacturer is a meaning for the bitter liquor sweetening line, which seems to me as though it isn't worth a dime and should be a suitable interpretation for the ears of youth -- but doesn't match my conception of it

About the cup:
I think it's the same cup which LC sings about in the darkness, that is Leonard got the darkness drinking from the cup
which is as stated --> "...a reference to Holy Communion, where wine becomes Christ's blood."

Hmmm, wasn't it a reference to oral sex in The Darkness as well? Just as in Light As The Breeze? I mean "ruby cup" *cough* Which wouldn't be a new idea of course... But it doesn't seem to be related to anything but religion in Born In Chains.
Anyway, I still understand "hampered cup" and it still doesn't make sense to me

A bit off-topic perhaps, but I'd certainly hope a more secular version of this evolves. It was thrilling to hear another new song, but I've listened to it so many times this week trying to add something to this discussion and all I can think to say is 'blessed are the cheesemakers'. More worryingly its starting to sound a little like an out-take from a Lloyd-Webber production. Anyone else feel this? Sorry to blaspheme, but I think I'd better follow John E's advice and wait for the finished version!

Aaah, thank you so much. I was wrecking my brain trying to find out where I had heard that kind of tune before.
Well, I very much prefer The Darkness and Feels So Good really.
The lyrics, as compared to the tune, are fine with me, although not very original to be honest.

Exactly! I know the song has been 'a hit' with many forum members/concert-goers and I really don't mean to cause any offence, but it sounds just like something from 'Joseph' to me. I must admit to 'switching off' when this song has been played in a concert. And it has that 'made up as it goes along' sound to it

Mind you, time and more limited exposure may modify this - I no longer switch off Jazz Police...even catch myself singing along :)

In a conversation with holydove it occurred to me he might be singing "Hobbit cup". - I think we should further research this possibility.

I was at the gothenberg concert last night and am pretty sure I heard hammered cup. I think this is in reference to the hammered Kiddush cup mentioned in the Torah. Just a thought.

But in the arms of sensual illusion
That would be a good line. But I don't hear it.

Maybe "Zen's solution"?

Or "Zen's illusion"?
