Pete, the only word I understood in your whole report on soccer was 'offside' but I am still looking forward to the games even if Ireland were unjustly knocked out of the qualifiers.

I am going to stick a pin in my world cup chart and put a few bob on a team to win just to make it interesting. but of course France will be crossed out of the list first. ( Sorry Judy... still love you lots )

We will have to arrange another meet up on the mainland UK so you can attend.

Can I point out to you that the wonderful game of soccer is not about men running around in shorts? It is much more than that. It is life itself. The struggle of man against man. The symmetries and patterns of formations that mirror the basic needs for survival and ultimate glory. The helixical representation of all that matters is akin to the molecular DNA structure that we all possess and which is ingrained in all humans to aid the celebration of all that is good with the game of soccer. It is this goodness that promotes eleven against eleven for the glory of gold and the glory of knowing that the human race appreciates all the fineries of those 90 minutes on the green turf where many complexities are offered to the world. The ingenuities behind pitting bravery, technique, tactics and formation against fellow countries is a marvel to behold. The offside law, the most talked about and misunderstood law of any ilk, is a complexity that can only be understood after many years of deep study and zen-like meditation

Thanks for the link. I ventured into my beloved Coventry City's chants within which there is a wealth of literary prose and harmonic melodies. Many of these truly reflect the analogies I painstakingly conjured in my previous post and it is very difficult to choose the one that offers a comparable depth of understanding, culture and history that soccer so successfully portrays. I have looked at each chant in turn and compared each of them to the works of the great poets, philosphers and historians, in that order. There is one that stands out above all others. The lyrics can be interpreted at many levels and, together with the superb musical arrangement that lifts the words to a higher plane and ethereal experience, there is no doubt that this is the one........

All this world cup talk makes me feel slightly uneasy. Here we go again. I have little interest in football as a rule, but nothing saves me from the terrible longing that seizes me when we - England - start to move towards that coveted victory, or the unspeakable suffering when tragedy strikes and we stand in ruins behind some other tin pot country. Again. I fear I may need to borrow some of Byron's pills. Beam me up.

....this life long decision of yours not to travel outside of the UK will surely have to be reversed when you retire......this doctor johnson and his fellow travellers really need a boswell to record our exploits for posterity on these cohen trips ....i'm planning on visiting a few old haunts in krakow by undertaking a massive vodka bar crawl in the old town in august ...now wouldn't that make a wonderful subject for your pen?
