Phil, along with Tinds, I am so happy you are standing! After Snowdon I doubted you would ever stand again. Now, when I am faced with deciding which least worst candidate to vote for, I can simply put my eggs (x) next to Philip Liptrot. You don't really regret the mountains, though. No pain no gain. Hard as they were, you will never stamp out the good memories. And that is far more serious than the politics thread.

I've been following this thread from afar, Phil. And there you go... FIB'ing, again. Politicians  . A hopeless lot you are...

Even so... PMPL!! Great platform. No doubt constructed at the first rest area ;-) .

You are absolutely right Diane I do not regret the mountains and the wonderful memories which are far more serious than the politics thread ( which mysteriously dissappeared then appeared again a bit like a politician at election time )so when I am elected prime minister on May 7th I will be appointing a minister for Leonard Cohen meetups with portfolio (or should that be portmerrion ) . As like all politicians I came into politics to make this world a better place ( for myself ) so he/she will be charged with the task of organising as many meetups as possible ( on expenses of course )Do you fancy the job you have a perfect CV !!

hopefully you carry on just concentrating your search for supporters for your promising FIB party amongst the increasingly silly and politically naive leonard cohen forum members rather than stoop to david cameron’s recent tactic of trying to ingratiate himself into the hearts and minds of the far more politically aware and worldly wise fraternity of dylan worshippers ….this is an excerpt from cameron’s recent shameful brown-nosing interview with the daily telegraph……

.........He likes 'boys’ films’ – Carlito’s Way, Where Eagles Dare, The Godfather – which, according to his wife, he can watch over and over again. His musical tastes are resolutely mainstream. Like anyone, the songs he grew up with as a teenager are permanently lodged in the brain – 'You only have to hear the first bar of [Soft Cell’s] Tainted Love and you know exactly where you are’ – but nowadays he has settled into Blur, Radiohead and Pulp, and he is a big fan of Bob Dylan. He chose Tangled up in Blue – 'the live version’ – as one of his Desert Island Discs.

'I’ve been to see him in concert a couple of times. I went to see him at the Hammersmith Odeon, probably 10 years ago, on my own because I couldn’t find any fellow Dylan fans, which is the best way to see him because you don’t have anyone annoying you with questions about why it’s not like the song they thought it was. The great thing about Dylan is that you can go through life discovering things you’ve overlooked. I’ve suddenly started listening to Street Legal – so I keep finding new Dylan albums that I love. It’s a joy.’

.....does the FIB party intend to look into the poor wages of bus drivers and other badly paid workers in the transport industy?...........

Poorly paid bus drivers forced to read ‘books’ when on duty

Bus drivers have today criticised the poor levels of pay they receive after one of their number was forced to resort to reading a ‘book’ whilst driving his bus around Birmingham.

The driver was filmed by a passenger flicking through the pages of the ‘book’, with the video uploaded to YouTube where it has been watched several thousand times by people not in need of a ‘book’.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUAh8CgZQ6M

Dave Simms, a bus driver from Coventry, said, “Yes, I’ll admit that seeing this type of behaviour on film is quite embarrassing.”

“But you have to remember that bus drivers don’t earn very much, so often a ‘book’ is the only thing we can afford to read when we’re on duty and bored witless.”

“Sure, we’d all like to be looking at an iPhone, but until we’re paid what we genuinely believe we deserve, that will remain nothing more than a pipe dream.”

Pay rise

The incident is set to lead to further calls for pay rises throughout the transport industry, in the hope that reading materials can be brought up to date across the board.

A representative of the Transport and General Workers Union said, “It is shameful that a worker providing such an essential service for the public must resort to entertaining themselves in such a demeaning manner.”

“In case you hadn’t noticed, the year is 2010, not 1970.”

“We now have eBooks, the Kindle, smart phones, and even the iPad, and yet still our members must entertain themselves on monotonous journeys using a series of printed pages bound together in chronological order to form a coherent story.”

“It’s the election issue that nobody wants to talk about, and so I would remind the main parties that the bus driver vote is there for the taking - by anyone offering an iPhone.”

PMPL ~ PIMPLE for short  . A whole bunch of puns came flying with that, but I don't have time to expound and they were beginning to get rather disgusting... as in Eeeewwwww... so, I'll just let it go at that ;-) .

It is outrageous that poorly paid bus drivers have to resort to this kind of thing and first thing Friday morning to hell with the "deficit "I will be setting up a STEERING committee to explore ways of COACHING bus drivers in how to claim an ipod on EXPENSES so they too can take the public for a ride

Just like Britain you might have economic problems but you have the music which will always bring a smile to peoples faces . We just have the x Factor . But anyway if elected I promise I will make it my first state visit but I am not promising what state I will be in when I get there because there will have to be the mandatory celebrating long into Thursday night/Friday morning . Will you be there at Dublin airport with a red( I think that gives away my voting intentions ) carpet to welcome me . Lets hope we do not encounter any corned beef hash clouds on the way ! This red wine is good tonight I will soon be writing rubbish if I do not watch myself !
Best Wishes

Dear Cohenite voters in the UK . As with all the major parties I will be campaigning right up to polling day and with that in mind I would like to post my final piece of political literature . I was not sure if it should go here or on the politics or poetry threads but this is where I am sure I will gain the most support . Among friends ! It is something that I want you to think on as you cast your vote :

Democracy

It’s not coming from anyone there
That house in Parliament square
It’s coming from the feel
That it ain’t exactly real
Or it’s real but it ain’t exactly fair
From the speaker who says order
From expenses they are paid
From the second home allowance
To the patios they have laid
Democracy is tarnished by how much they made

It’s coming from those cracks in the wall
Fixed and paid for with no job receipts at all
From the dodgy mortgage fees
To the holidays with ski’s
Which I don’t pretend to understand at all
It’s coming from their silence
Within the “rules” THEY made
From their innocent excuses
Why this sleazy cash was paid
Democracy is coming to make them pay

It’s coming from the sorrow in the street
At the places where the honest people meet
From their homicidal bitchin
To defend their brand new kitchen
Then claim from us everything they eat
From the peoples disappointment
Where the voters kneel and pray
They have just betrayed us here
But now it’s time to say
Democracy is coming to make them pay

Vote on, Vote on
And leave them to their fate
It is what we need
To destroy this greed
And mend the hate

It’s coming to Westminster first
The cradle of the best and the worst
It’s here they acted strange
And things have got to change
And it’s here their little con has just been burst
And it’s here the rules were broken
That’s why the people say
They have got to be more open
In a fundamental way
Democracy is coming to make them pay

It’s coming from the women and the men
Who from now on will be in charge again
They will cut expenses deep
And make our MP’s weep
To hear the poor old voters shout Amen!
We will take them down a peg or two
Whatever they may say
We will right the wrong for what’s gone on
In a moralistic way
Democracy is coming to make them pay

I’m old fashioned if you know what I mean
I love my country but I don’t like where it’s been
I am neither left nor right
I’m just staying home tonight
Disillusioned by all I’ve heard and seen
But I’m as stubborn as those garbage bags
That time cannot decay
These people tried to rob us blind
And now we’ll have our say
Democracy is coming on election day

Vote for the FIB party we never lie to you !!

I don't know what you do to earn your living, Phil, but you have a second career waiting in the wings. Brilliant was the word that came to my mind as I sang your song through, but Margaret already used it. So, I'll just say that you make FIB'ers look good!

We had an old-time radio program here called Fibber McGee and Molly. Not sure if it had a theme song, but if it did, you might want to check into it for when you get on the campaign trail. Seems you'd better move quick, though... you're clearly the grassroots candidate so far. Here's hoping you'll be the dark horse, too.
