Well, I'm enjoying our 'home' reviews more than I did the commercial critics unknown to us.

Briefly:
Re: Lizzy's comments about it was geared towards a younger audience, I have to ask, how many "young" people even know who he is.
Your question is my point. They don't know Cohen. They do know a number of the key players in the film... a phenomenon of appreciation by association. Willing to look further since . . . likes/loves him.

Geared to attract the younger person, via the others... and once arrived at the destination of "Cohen," to actually 'like' the presentation [think MTV] and then investigate this Cohen guy further, where the "Where's the beef?" question will be answered in spades. Mixed metaphor... will be answered Prime.

Judith's Review "I'm Your Man"

Post by Natalie »

Hi everyone,

As far as a younger audience knowing who all of the performers were, I think they'd only know about Bono, perhaps Rufus, as well.

I don't think it was her intention to attract a younger audience. I think she was going for people like us, the die hard fans.

I would love her to comment on this Forum. That would be amazing.

I think that people have issue with the technique, followed closely by the choice of performers.

My only criticism is that I would have liked to seen less of the performers and more of Leonard.

Anyway, that's all for now.

Bye,

I can understand the frustration of some viewers, knowing that Lian gained the privilege of a private audience with Leonard, for an apparently rather extensive period of time, all totaled... and with the knowledge of that fact, came expectations... of rather mythic proportions, in fact; when one imagines being qualified to create such a production and, in a perfect world, being privy to endless hours of interview and conversation with Leonard, in preparation for it.

Oh, yes, the mind creates much of value, when one doesn't need to worry about the responsibility of bringing it into reality. Still, we carry our baggage of expectations into the viewing room, which of course sets us up for disappointment to begin with... but when it comes to Leonard, how can we not have expectations. I mean someone has just created a film titled "I'm Your Man"!

Judith's Review "I'm Your Man"

Post by Natalie »

Hi everyone,

First of all, I think it was very bold of her to create and present "I'm Your Man." I think she was well aware of the great expectations the Fans would have. I applaud her for making the film. Again, I was just blown away. It was fresh, current, and I thought it nailed down the pulse of the Cohen Tribute Phenomena of the 20th and 21 century. How many people are honoured all over the world, multiple times by various artists, famous and those not so well known? Leonard isn't even dead yet!

For her to undertake such a large project, I think was commendable. I ask those of you who criticize her to think about that. I think she did a wonderful job, given the ample room for a failure. I still feel that the 'docu' was a huge success. I believe it was one of the top 10 documentaries made last year.

So, there you have it. Again, my only criticism would be less performers, more Leonard.

Bye for now,

On the same page where one finds the trailer for I'm Your Man, one will find the following under "Synopsis":

"Sure to please both diehard Cohen fans and the newly initiated . . ."

"There is no doubt of the comprehensive, moving expression River gives to the lostness of the person in frantic cultural desuetude, to human resilience and revolt, and to the search for life-preserving sources of interest, pleasure, and joy. Also genuine is Judith Fitzgerald's attraction to the current cultural exploration of free play of sensibility, a sort of dispersed Dionysianism . . . River, and poetry in general, are today bringing these unavoidable questions to us with a penetration and vitality unmatched elsewhere in culture."

You are beginning to make me curious; where is it? (ha ha ha!!!) But seriously, 'Beautiful Losers' was "the most revolting book ever written in Canada" according to one critic - so just how DOES one write negatively about a writer's work without arousing interest? A writer will only be too proud to have instilled a reaction such as the one you here display. Indifference is the writer's fear. Diarrhea rather than constipation.

Judith's Review "I'm Your Man"

Hi,

I think "inciting interest" is exactly what I've wanted to do. I've been wanting to talk about this film for a long time, but I post something on the Forum and get a few responses and then it fizzles out. Finally, Judith's review has opened the channels of discussion, here.

I agree with you that, yes, a writer would like to get such a strong reaction from a piece, positive or negative.

The biggest question I pose to those on the "I'm NOT your Fan of "I'm Your Man" is the following: what kind of documentary would have made you happy?

I think that "Ladies and Gentlemen, ..." is the best project I have seen, but I really enjoyed "I'm Your Man."

So, that's all for now.

Well, I've read the posts, and yes I've read Judith Fitzgerald's review from start to finish.
To make a reply I turned to Latin: the most laconic language in the world.
I wrote two sentences in English, and asked my friend John to help me translate it. He did so, in seven words:

Cave ne literatorum nuntium in crucem tollas

I guess that sums it up: a defence of Judith in Latin.

Andrew.

P.S. Latin is going out of date, so if you require a translation into English, you'd better reply sooner than later.

Sanctos subiunctivos, Andreviveros :). Tolerabiles ineptiae. Non omne quod licet honestum est; ergo, vivere commune est, sed non commune mereri.
