LEONARD COHEN CONFIRMS BROOKLANDS SUPPORT ACT
The legend is set to play a one off UK outdoor concert next month


Leonard Cohen is to be supported by folk-music revivalist Suzanne Vega at his one-off Surrey show next month.

Performing at the unique Brooklands site, at Mercedes Benz World, on July 11, this will be Vega's only UK show this Summer, whilst Cohen will also be playing an indoor show at Liverpool's Echo Arena on July 14.

Vega's hits include "Luka" and "Tom's Diner."

Thanks for that Sturgess - I quite like Suzanne Vega.

It must be an outdoor concert thing because the only other time he seems to have had any supporting act was in Dublin Damien Rice and he was very good too.

Because it has been announced so late in the day any Suzanne Vegas fans will not have much luck getting tickets

Also in Australia where they had Paul something or other. But surely there have been other outdoor concerts where there was no opener - Edinburgh? Red Rocks?

I wonder what that does for timing though. As osmacher says, does it mean we will get a shorter set from Leonard? They must have a curfew at MBW because of the area.

Doubt it will affect LC's set duration at all. Damien Rice only played for half an hour in Dublin, and I expect Ms Vega will be the same. Plus I'm not sure the venue will have an early music curfew anyway - it is effectively on an industrial estate half a mile from the nearest residential area. Also this might explain why the doors are open so early (4pm for a 7.30 start) - perhaps she'll be going on earlier. I like her. Yay!

Suzanne Vega opens for Leonard Cohen! Wow, it sounds like a dream - wish I could be there... It's well deserved, it's nice finally to see somebody who really learned a lot from Cohen playing as his opening act (and to see him allowing that).

Delighted as I am that Vega is playing, I can't help but bristle at more slightly inaccurate hype. Last week AEG claimed that Weybridge was Leonard's only UK show this year (later qualifying that in the small-print as his only OUTDOOR show), now we have Uncut claiming - presumably based on a press release - that "this will be Vega's only UK show this Summer" when she's actually playing Birmingham Town Hall the very next day.

Did I miss the meeting where everyone decided that the word "show" only applies to outdoor concerts from now on?

A cynic would suggest that this relentless "only UK show" hype suggests that Weybridge tickets are selling slower than the promoters were hoping for. Perhaps even the great Mr Cohen is affected by the current economic climate

More likely it's because people are wary about an outdoor concert in the British climate The cold and rain I experienced in Dublin and Edinburgh last year are not something I wish to repeat if there are indoor shows!

Ticketmaster is currently selling tickets in block D2 which suggests that ticket sales aren't too shabby despite our current economic difficulties.

i saw her at the Isle of Wight in 2004, what a perfect supporting artist, another one of my favourite artist from the angst ridden teenage years

Sorry to add a discordant note, but I am really p*ss*d off at a support act being foisted on us at the last moment. After years of indifference, my two adult children have kindly consented to come to an LC concert, and I bought some of the best seats in the arena for them. It's been a challenge to get them to 'try' three hours of Leonard, without asking them to now sit through 30+ minutes extra from someone they have never heard of and have no interest in (my son's favourite group is Tenacious D, very very different from Vega!)

I had hoped to come and go by train, but does this mean the concert is going to extend late into the night, after the last train has left?

This is a classic case of 'more is less'. It is plain wrong to change the line-up after tickets have gone on sale.

Speak for yourself! Although I live a couple of miles from Weybridge I'm going to Liverpool to see Cohen, don't want to take the risk of a wet night but I have to say that I'm EXTREMELY jealous that Weybridge will be getting two for the price of one. You really are very lucky!
