Yes Cate, you got the 'we.' Who would have thought such a tiny word would cause such a discussion.
Lizzytish, I set myself to write this poem within a certain rhythmic pattern and rhyming scheme - essentially a sonnet form. This is an exercise in control - trying to create a poem within certain 'rules' without twisting language too out of shape. I like to perform this kind of exercise because it makes you take more care with the words you use and how you put them together. It forces you to consider structure.
This form just seemed to fit the subject matter and is why I chose it.

I loved the poem, and was surprised that the thread itself degraded into what it did. One thing is interesting, and all poets understand this, if a poem incites emotion, then it has done its job. It matters little the type of emotional response, that is within the reader, and the poem is just a catalyst to open the thought process and allow the inner images to come to the fore.
As I know the term "Come to the fore" might cause some to comment on its use, see link below.

Ah, good. I'm glad to see you didn't take offense to my off-the-cuff remark, Cate... or, at least, you didn't let it show, if you did. I really was just teasing because it seemed the perfect set-up, when you described the seeming 'impossibility' of doing it otherwise. Sorry I missed all the goodnights and I felt the "John Boy" pattern, too. I hardly ever saw the show, but it was always such a nice warm closing. So, Goodnight, Sheila
.
Thanks for that explanation, Vern. I'd forgotten that you'd already mentioned before that you'd chosen the sonnet form... or maybe someone commented on how it was that. Now, see, if I'd copied that portion, I'd have remembered it
.
Ha. Yeah, it was rather interesting how the thread just went off the road onto the bumpy gravel and into the ditch. Such a lovely vehicle, too.

ahhh I can't help it - I need to highlight!
I grew up in a subdivision in the country and played with a fair number of boys (silence from you Sue) from my point of view, if you don't give me the occasional push, I'll wonder why you don't like me.
Well speaking of culture effecting how you view things...lizzytysh wrote:Ah, good. I'm glad to see you didn't take offense to my off-the-cuff remark, Cate... or, at least, you didn't let it show, if you did. I really was just teasing

I've experienced some 'cultural differences' regarding that very thing, too. For me, it works if there's some already-established trust, but straight outta the gate, it takes me aback. I remember that precious time of playing with boys... and how that little shove felt at the time

Edited to add that they had not yet learned better and more appropriate ways of expressing affection. The little-kid little shoves are not the same as the grown shoves and pushes. Not at all.

I'd have liked to have had some coffee-flavoured brandy last night... just because. Still, it seems I must've gotten a Net Contact High after you had yours, as I fell asleep easily and quickly.

absolute Tommy Rot- if I write to inspire sadness and the reader laughs the poem has failed, yes FAILED. The fact that it "incites emotion" to some passing simpleton is irrelevant. Your claim that "all poets understand" your argument is an indication of a sad delusion. All real poets probably understand the excuses of non-poets for their failures.

I may be wrong, but your opening sentence here seems contrary to what is written afterwards. It seems you did take offence, Vern - although I am not sure at what. Is it possible to tell me what it is that makes you react in this way?

... OKAY... I know this is a little off the beaten path here, but... I'm noticing that there's an awful lot of infighting going on right now at this godforsaken forum (so called), and so... I'd like to offer up a little theory on this...
(LITTLE THEORY): There are those who believe that a comet cluster... whose orbit is something like 3600 years... meaning it enters our planet's neighborhood, as it were, every 3600 years or so... anyway, there are those who believe that this comet cluster is about due.. and we're talking very very soon, like any time now... and as it approaches it's disturbing our magnetic field, and causing us to... hmm, how do I put this... sort of go nuts... In other words, this is to say (scientifically speaking, that is) we should all take heart... it's not that we really mean to be tearing at each other's throats, when in fact we are actually getting awfully close to having our precious little blue planet tipped right off its axis (even more than it usually is, as I've read it already wobbles) (which explains I think my own wobbly nature, at least) (and also why Georges knocks me right off my feet) (probably)... anyway, this tipsy thing of course will inevitably cause... well, it's a pretty dismal picture, I'm afraid, but it seems that at least some of the earth's population is expected to survive...
So, to rephrase this slightly: everyone just sit back and relax.. it's not this US/WE/THEY/THEM, ETC. situation at all... don't even waste your, well, as it happens, very precious time thinking about all that... it's just this stupid little comet cluster we have to worry about... (!)...
Sincerely,
v i o l e t (on her scientific side, though
don't make me have to compare notes with
Manna, I'm not sure I would fair very
well...)... (oh, and Mr. Sirus... I'm looking
forward to fervently lurking a bit with you,
I mean, before all of this comet cluster stuff
gets going... after all... there's so little
time...)...

Hmmmm?
I thought I was just joining in on the joke, or running gag. Isn't that what this was about? Or were you being serious?

The comet makes sense. Everything at the station was FUBAR earlier today, the AP news went nuts and the computers are slow.

Just one small question, do you know what FUBAR actually stands for? Having been in the Military I do know the full meaning BTW.

... Anunitu... I love the color of your little sign there... well, I like the whole thing, actually, but the color especially... just thought I'd mention it...
