Leonard's Hat

A "jumper" is British-speak for what we would call a "sweater."

I hesitate to enter the minefield of clothing word useage in different cultures, but, here goes.

When I was growing up in Canada, "many years ago", a jumper was a sleeveless dress, worn over a blouse or sweater by schoolgirls.

Yes, Arlene, I recall that use of the word jumper as well!

And holydove, I also recall using "jumper" to refer to a one-piece out-fit worn by women and kids (which often zipped up the front, and had either long or short pants), which is perhaps what you were thinking of, and that would, indeed, be an odd thing for Leonard to be wearing! (However, I recall seeing Sean Connery wearing one in a James Bond film, Goldfinger I believe, which was baby-blue and had very short pants. Not every guy could pull that off!)

Lisa & Arlene - yes, those are the two meanings of "jumper" that I knew of.

Also, Lisa, about that one-piece zip-up thing called "jumper": I remember a version of this that infants would wear, & sometimes it would have no pants at all - it was kind of like a woman's one-piece bathing suit, that would cover the torso, & maybe have some kind of short sleeve, but the infant's legs would be bare.

I would NEVER have remembered Sean Connery's scene in that outfit if you hadn't mentioned it, but when I read your words, I kind of remembered that - LOL!! Well, if Sean Connery could pull it off, I'm sure Leonard could, but I'm not exactly sure that Leonard would be interested in donning such attire. . .

Hmmm, now that holydove has mentioned the "jumper" being a baby's outfit, I am reminded of an intriguing article (provided by holydove!) in which various speculations are made with regards to the kinkiness that seems to be apparent in Leonard's lyrics. (see link below)

This article (in part two) notes that one form of "submission" involves one of the "partners" (often the man) dressing up like a baby and being treated accordingly (and this view is supported by noting the lyrics of "Because Of," in particular!). Perhaps the "jumper" reference was not so British, after all!

Lisa - interesting association!! So perhaps that photo carries deeper significance than we had imagined! We must now contemplate the possibility of hidden references to "age regression" in Leonard's photos. . .(& it's still not about the hat. . . after all!!)
