.. okay.. I shall wait for your rephrased question.. months and months, if I have to.. in the meantime, if an interesting cloudscape should float past your camera.. or should you hear a lovely song.. or should something else Violet-like occur.. I'll be here.. waiting for further God given guidance..

v i o l e t (flower).. a bit wilted at this point.. (thus my taking a break on these premises)..

Those pelicans flew around in circles, Violet! Anyway, I'll show you any pictures I get, but you please determine any God given guidance I might have captured - if God is okay with that. You don't want me interpreting these things, trust me again...

I've always... um... disliked opera, for reasons oft-recorded by others. When Sissel does it though, it sounds different to me.

Also, thank you very much for clarifying that.

Just to clarify (I was being silly): The pelicans circled (soaring for several minutes so I could get the pictures), then they formed up and flew off eastward.

I never expect the unexpected.

So I woke up around 5:30 and couldn't get back to sleep, it turned out E was awake too and couldn't sleep. This never happens, it's a first. So we get up amazed and I go outside. E takes Mr. Darcy for a walk and it occurs to me that it's before 10:30, which is when McDonalds stops serving breakfast. I'm a big fan of McDonalds breakfast sausage but usually I get up well past 10:30 so rarely get to indulge. Well, rarely for me might seem frequent for others.

So I got in Silver (I'll spare you the background on Silver) and drove off and E was at the entrance of the park here as Mr. Darcy was happily wrapping his leash around a neighbor who was walking to work (hard to believe people get up this early but it's amazingly busy here outside around 6 in the morning). Busted, I invited E and Mr. Darcy along to McDonalds where, as is my custom, I purchased two Apple Pies in addition to the two sides of sausage and medium Coke with no ice using my PayPal Debit Card - the Apple Pies in order to silence possible criticism for buying pork sausage at such a premium when we're low on funds. It worked, as usual, and I drove around town while eating the sausage and E had an Apple Pie (today I let her have mine too) as the sun rose over Hurricane Cliffs. Nothing much was going on, but we did see a "Hazardous Material" yellow ribbon all around the Bike Store and two emergency vehicles out front though no activity visible (maybe a gas leak) 'cause we drove around it twice.

All of a sudden :-) while driving down the street one street over from State Street and one block from Main Street I spotted a pecan tree full of Turkey Vultures, right in the center of town. I counted 25. It's possible they congretate in that tree every morning to plan out their day, but I've never seen that many Turkey Vultures in one tree in the center of town. As veteran birdwatchers we get excited at seemingly odd things, I suppose.

It was about this time that I thought of you, Violet, and remembered that I'd forgotten to bring the camera along.

So, we streaked home, got the camera, and streaked back which took a good 20 minutes. In the meantime there were several sirens coming from downtown as there was an accident or fire towards St. George and the rescue trucks blazed down State Street with everything on. I was sure the Turkey Vultures would flee, but only seven of them had "flown the coup", the rest were still there. And they stayed there. They would appear to be very tame Turkey Vultures. I've never gotten that close to any kind of vultures before.

I got a few pictures:

The 18 brave ones:

Checking out the funny looking couple below:
Image

This was the Boss, I believe. He had the highest branch and the most practiced posture of macabre:
Image

This one stretched for me. Actually they seem to stretch a lot:
Image

A closer view:

That sign is the good news.

The bad news is that E reminded me that the camera takes movies, so I took several video clips of stretching Turkey Vultures (I even swung around to show Mr. Darcy as he cried because he couldn't follow E to look for Turkey Vulture feathers in the street under the tree) and they turned out great if a little shaky but...

To edit them and shrink them to an uploadable size I needed to order QuickTime Pro for this machine, which I knew was $29.95 because Patty Stein had bought it for me for my other machine years ago, so I checked PayPal and I had US $31.47 left after McDonalds. I then went to the Apple Web site and filled out the order form but when I hit "Continue"...

Did you know Apple charges SALES TAX for online purchases from UTAH?

I needed $31.86 to continue but PayPal only had $31.47 in it because I'd bribed my wife with those two Apple Pies.

And I didn't even get to eat one.

So... Still no video, sorry... :-)

E is loving this. I told her, who knows, maybe LC himself will peek in like Violet said and see what you've done for me.

Elizabeth is the Right Hand here. :-)

.. wow, Casey.. this is quite a combination of things, this post of yours..

.. at first glance, between the "hazardous material" yellow ribbon, and all the activity around that, combined with all those turkey vultures hanging out in that pecan tree in the center of town.. hmm.. (I'm thinking).. this doesn't sound too promising, sign wise..

.. first off, gas leaks are dangerous, if that’s what the hazard was.. but does this in any sense add a kind of urgency to our decoding this set of signs here today?.. don’t know.. (is my answer)..

.. anyway.. I did a quick google search on some things..

.. according to the Pueblo Indians, the Vulture is a symbol of purification.. meanwhile, the number eighteen is related to the moon, it seems.. though I don’t know in terms of what (that would be another google search, I guess)..

.. as I throw Tarot cards upon occasion.. here’s part of an interpretation of the moon card:

The moon will lead the traveler up the path to enlightenment, if he will only listen to his inner voice. When the Moon appears in a Tarot spread, look for development of latent psychic abilities. The Moon is intuition and imagination, but can also represent hidden messages.. things are not always as they seem, so trust your instinct..

Meanwhile, funnily enough.. the pecan tree is the state tree of Texas.. which ties us to Sissel’s, uh, Texas accent??.. or at least it ties us to Sissel, if only through a joke maneuver..

.. pecans can also lead us to New Orleans.. the home of praline candy, it seems (which is made from pecans).. and actually, the moon and New Orleans have a good deal of personal significance for me right now.. so.. who’s to say.. oh, and gosh, New Orleans is the Crescent City, isn't it?.. so there's the moon again..

All of which is to say that I’m not being struck by any grand conclusions here.. I’m just swimming around a bit.. It’s quite an image, though, those vultures in that tree.. ominous, but maybe only at first glance..

.. oh, I read something funny about vultures that I thought interesting, since you brought up your McDonald’s breakfast.. it’s an excerpt from an article I found called The Vulture by one Dawn Firewolf, whoever she may be.. (and if that hadn't been her name, I may have had to invent it).. anyway, Dawn says that since vultures have a pretty intense digestive system (given all the yucky decaying matter and bacteria ‘n such that they consume), she advises the following (as you'll see, she has a rather symbolic take on things):

This is helpful to remember when a Vulture comes into your life.. Your own digestive system may change. Things you used to enjoy without problem may suddenly cause trouble.. You may have to start paying attention to how you feel -- physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally.. If you have trouble handling the heat (I hope you're not in charbroiled Tennessee right now! sheesh!), try soaking your feet in cold water.

.. oh dear, I hope this doesn't spoil your favorite McDonald's breakfast, Casey.. but I thought I'd pass it along, in any event.. In terms of myself, I seem to always have to pay attention to how I feel physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally.. so no news there..

By the way.. is Mr. Darcy named after the Darcy of Jane Austen’s novel, Pride and Prejudice??.. I love Jane Austin.. and actually, speaking of things not being as they first appear, the character Mr. Darcy is a case in point.. he might be something like the vulture, actually.. one's first impression would have him a bit on the onerous side, but eventually he’s revealed to have very redeeming qualities..

.. okay.. need to get back to work now.. however, if all of this comes together as some kind of "message".. I'll certainly let you know..
.. oh, and say hello to Elizabeth for me..
so signed,
v i o l e t (flower).. hmm.. is it a crescent moon tonight in these parts?.. probably too hazy to even see..

.. oh, and speaking of Silver.. the name of your car, it seems.. there's a band called Silver Jews who do a song called The Moon is the Number 18...
.. I'm hoping this all somehow bodes well for the project I'm currently doing, actually.. so time will tell..

.. oh, the edits were adding the comment about Dawn's name.. and now this verbiage.. v.

As I said, interpretations are your duty... I'll just post unusual things happening around here that I think you may be interested in, per your request. I wasn't expecting to see anything unusual until the time is up (there's that rule about tempting... etc... but I guess you're special), or until I come up with a rephrasing of that question.

Again, the only thing I'm sure really WAS unusual that generated this post to begin with was the fact that E and I were both laying awake in bed at around 6 AM this morning.

I'm surprised you missed that... be sure to take it into account with the Texas/terot/vulture stuff.

Don't forget that you forgot the words to "Imagine" (seems to be an issue with your generation). Glad you're paying attention to how you feel.

Back to my freelance roving sign reporter role... :-)

Mr. Darcy's name indeed comes from Pride & Prejudice... "If his legs were longer he'd be tall, dark, and handsome..."

... oh, yes.. you're right.. if it is highly unusual that you both be awake so early, you're right.. that and the hazard tape.. they seem like the "couching" as it were for the other signs.. the "Better Pay Attention" part, if you will.. and I know I said this already, but the fact I was led to the moon and to New Orleans.. well.. I can only say that that's pretty significant for me..

.. if there's something still unsettling though, I guess it would be that yellow hazard tape.. maybe it's to light a fire under me a bit.. (I better get back to work).. (!)..

.. thank you, my roving sign reporter,
'til later,
v i o l e t.. gee.. I thought Darcy's legs were longer.. or did you mean the dog??..

.. oh, hi Cate.. and you?.. did you mean the dog?.. or..

.. well, if he's nearing tall, dark and handsome, then there's a good chance he'd make a good dance partner as well.. probably better than the original Mr. Darcy, in fact.. probably..

I'll find out what was behind the hazard tape... E felt the same way as far as it being "better pay attention", which is why she had me take a second spin around the bike shop. It's a new shop, one of the ones you wonder how long it will last because this is a small town - though a lot of Europeans come here to bike on the mesas. I got a basket there, very expensive for a basket. The bikes... well, maybe one was painted in China with lead paint? The gas leak theory doesn't hold because the tape was right close around the house. If gas was in danger of exploding they would need much more tape.

Cate, Mr. Darcy dances delightfully. :-)

It's worse than we thought...

Apparently the owner of the bike store wakes up even earlier than E & I do (every day!).

Anyway, as he was sitting there his Expresso machine inexplicably and suddenly exploded, sending coffee all the way across the room onto his lap. He was taken to the hospital, where he was treated I assume.

The "Hazardous Material" tape was hastily put up until an investigation into the cause of the explosion could be completed.

It seems two backup something-or-others on the Expresso machine both failed at once, resulting in the previously mentioned explosion. Prior to today, the Expresso machine had been running fine for a year and a half (it's been going since the store opened).

When we visited the bike shop this evening the yellow tape had been removed, and all was back to normal.

Except that the owner was still absent.

(There is a Sissel song called "Fire In Your Heart", but I felt it would be inapropriate at this time.)

Good morning, Casey.. I should be drinking some manner of coffee it seems, given the news you've brought us, but I'm not.. just a wee cuppie of Irish Breakfast, which to me is strong enough..

.. well, first off, we've got to clear up this expresso/espresso matter.. this is a forum dedicated to some manner of writing, after all, so first things first.. anyway, here's what I found:

Question:

Is that rich coffee brew called espresso or expresso?

Answer: Espresso, which originated in Milan, Italy circa 1900, is a very dark, bitter Italian coffee often miscalled expresso.

The term espresso comes from the Italian meaning "pressed out," referring to the process of pushing the freshly fine-ground bean essence through a special machine using steam and water. This process creates a highly concentrated brew with a thin layer of creamy, dark beige froth on the coffee's surface.

.. okay, glad that's been cleared up.. now you can spread the word out West, as most Americans I think are a bit vague on this point..

.. but what to make of this terrible espresso-related happenstance? (.. my well wishes to the poor bike store owner, by the way..)..

.. you cracked me up with your Sissel comment.. there is the temptation to crack a few jokes, even if it's, well, in poor taste at the moment..

.. hmm.. an unexpected, out-of-the-blue coffee explosion.. an express expression of pure espresso, so to speak.. or just an unbridled bitter outburst.. (to get my 'b''s going)..

Well, I guess I'll have to let this, um, brew a bit in my psyche.. I'm not sure what this might add to our sign story here.. Bad Bad Leroy Brown (wow, there's some more 'b''s) is playing in a parked car outside my window just now, if that means anything.. (maybe the fabled outlaw is also a good dancer)..

.. okay, Casey.. I'll be brewing away here.. wondering what this could mean.. there is cause and effect always at work, of course... something caused both back-up systems to fail at once, after all.. still, it's odd that this would happen the one morning you were both up so early.. and then the turkey vultures.. and during your budding sign reportage period.. all very odd..

'til later,
v i o l e t.. recalling now that bitter taste of black espresso.. even after putting sugar in..

Now you know why Dorothy is cooled by Hillbilly AC.

I've never even seen an espresso, but at least if it had been cappuccino I would have been forced to look it up.

Instead I brazenly relied on the Western Canadian pronuciation of "espresso" which this morning I've been informed, with a smile, really is "expresso".

Not meaning to pass the buck of course... I take full responsibility and warn that it will happen again. I am working with limited resources. I don't even know why I'm here, really. :-)
