jarkko, i must say,as others have already, that i just love your avatar. It is very beautiful.
By the way.. is your wife a professional sculptor or does she make ice sculptures just as a hobby?

Jarkko, could you show us your avatar as a large picture? It must be very interesting.

Making this kind of ice and snow sculptures is Eija's hobby in Winter time - I took two from her large collection of digital photos and finally chose the one I'm now using as my avatar. The other is beautiful, too, but smaller version is getting a bit unclear.

If you want to know more about these write to Eija at ea@nebula.fi

In Minnesota we have winter carnivals, where sculptors show their talents and it is beautiful especially in the larger cities like St Paul' s winter carnival. Eija's sculpure is lovely.

Eija's hearts are exquisite and stunning, Jarkko! The smaller one is especially intriguing, being encased in the circle. The colours that the candles bring to them are awesome. Pure magic. Excellent, Eija, excellent! Enlarging them really does them due justice....admittedly not practical for the avatar role, of course  .

I saw the Ice Castle of Lapland when I watched the New Year of 2000 brought in around the world on a TV special [National Geographic? or something like that]. I immediately wanted to travel there to see it in person. One of the most beautiful New Years of my recollection. Very interesting to watch the differences in celebrations, worldwide.

I love the way threads develop on here. This started as a topic about the heatwave, and here we end up discussing ice sculptures :D

It looks like a very warm heart though made of ice. Kind of paradoxical.

Must be Jarkko who melts the ice.

Jarkko ~

Was the phrase that Lightning just quoted perhaps inspirational to Eija with these pieces? Or merely happenstance?

Back to the heatwave ~ global warming and all that. Do these people, whom I overheard today, have their information right? Is it really true that 10,000 in France, and 20,000 total in Europe have died as a result of the incredible heatwave that has occurred over there? These are unbelievably tragic numbers. A phenomenal loss of life. I was stunned, and remain so, to hear this. Incredibly sad.

No Lizzytysh, it was purely coincidental

I think it was about 10,000 died in Britain the heat took its toll on old people mainly and there were quite a few people died from swimming related accidents. We are not equipped in this part of the world for such oppressive heat. I am pleased to say it rained all day yesterday and it was lovely.

They say it is going to get progressively hotter now and I read in one of the papers (it will take ions for this to happen) that all fair skinned people will eventually disappear and we will mutate into darker skinned people as happened over many many years to people who lived in places like Africa as the darker skin is a protection against the effects of the sun.
