i shall be travelling to the very edge christendom next week to do a bit of gentle walking....although i can't claim it's in anyway preparation for the cohen bavarian walk in 2011.......i shall be travelling to the pagan dark lands of the yorkshire coast to do a couple of days on the cleveland way........i have purposefully chosen two easy stretches...day 1 scarborough to staintondale (8 miles)....day 2 fylinghall to whitby (8 miles)...so that will be 16 miles in two days..........

i have already brushed up on my yorkshire and after a very unpleasant incident in leeds last month i have memorised the following....

......so philip can you think of any other yorkhire phrases that may come in handy next week......btw i've searched my phrase book and can't find the yorkshire for.....

can i buy you a drink or it's my turn to buy you a drink.......why is that?......ta ken

A popular saying in Barnsley used to be "can tha lend us a tenner till payday" but you don't hear it very often these days because everybody is unemployed . But if you ask someone and they lend it you just make sure you won't be seeing them again

No doubt you are walking as training for keeping up with Tom in Zagreb! We hope both trips are lots of fun. Ordinarily, I would be in the best shape of the year right now in preparation for skiing the Birkie. However I am unable to ski this year so I am determined to come out of hibernation after this too long winter.

Bascom Hill is really not too steep, but I walk it often mostly because of all the cute coeds who frequent it.

Thanks for asking about my eye. I seem to be healing very well and am getting some sight back in it now as the gas bubble shrinks. The bubble will dissipate in another couple of weeks and hopefully they will be able to tell if the surgery was successful. I am back fully upright now, though I still can't turn on my back or look at the ceiling.

Hope all are doing well.

A walk of around 5 miles on the flat is a challenge at my age I am totally out of condition now after being mostly confined indoors this long winter!

good to hear that everything is going well for you......you are in good hands with anne.....bad news on the birkie front.....i know how much you look forward to and enjoy 'playing around' in the snow at the birkebeiner each year but i'm sure next year's birkie will be more the sweeter for having to miss out this year .....as for keeping up with tom in zagreb.....his legs are most definitely longer and certainly faster but has he got the stamina of us old timers:-)....if all else fails there's always the tram..........ta ken

Yes Diane, it was snowing again as I was driving to work this morning There have been light snow showers all day but I was too snowed under with work to see them myself!

We are off to Shakespeare country (Stratford on Avon) on Monday for a few days. I hope it's not too cold and slippery for walkabout

I would like to point out to you that it is more difficult keeping a thread going when the subject is associated with pain and suffering and five days of sobriety as opposed to a thread which by the sound of it was just one long Spanish fiesta .The brave men and women of Barmouth are content to go down in the history of the forum for their courage and fortitude and let their walking do their talking. Some people were put on this earth to stretch the limits of human endeavour and some are just here to have fun .If we beat the Barcelona thread then so be it
(P S How many times do I have to keep posting this rubbish until we beat them and you buy me the drink in Kracow you promised )

Phil,
I know what you mean about the arduous climb and extreme conditions that were endured by our group in Barmouth, but I thought you were referring to the climb up to the Royal Hotel each evening and the sobriety was short-lived.

I have been reading about Mr. Washington in Northern New Hampshire and was hoping to pose it as a potential destination for our mountain climbing group. Then I read that it is 6 thousand feet and, on average, every 2 out of 3 days, the winds reach hurricane velocity. The winds have been known to blow at speeds over 200 miles per hour. However, before you dismiss it out of hand, it does have a cog railway-we could take a lesson from the smarter members of our group and still having our pictures taken at the summit.

Margaret, we hope you have a great time in Stratford upon Avon-Anne & I have always wanted to go there. Perhaps someday.
